Cruickshank now holds commanding leads in the Inland Empire Sports Rider Association points race in the 500 and Open Expert classes. To do well at the Hueller track, on~ has to ride speedway-styIe and average an incredible 70 mph. Heats and semis were crowd pleasers in Expert action, which had local Arney Wick fly to 500 and Open Expert wins andsitout the semis while Yamamoto and Cruickshank weren't that hUlky and made the main via the semi Motocrosser Andy James won the 250cc Expert semi after gelling by Tr,acy Collins and Oregon's Clay -Light. The Mains got the spectators buzzing, especially after seeing a fantastic performance in the final 250cc Sportsman semi in which an 80cc rider swept the race start to finish. Ren Yamamoto put a borrowed bike irno the lead at the start of the 250cc Expert main event with Tim Stults, Andy James and Rusty Yamamoto in pursuit. Ron Yamamoto rides with a "kamakazi-style" that is on the edge ot disaster, but it works and it took the AMA Expert to the flag for the win over brother Rusty, Stults, James and Kenny Duncan. Corky Jurkovich led what was to be the premier main event of the evening, the 500cc Expert main. Clear desert skies and a cool summer breeze , made for a perfect setting as Yamamoto took the lead for the early portion of lap one on his new Suzuki, only to have Cruickshank come from way back to take the lead. Arney Wick and Yamamoto joined the hunt, but Cruickshank pulled gradually away from the duo and secured the win in .- usual style to beat Yamamoto, Wick, Jurkovich and Phil Hamby. Yamamoto took the inside and Cwickshank the outside at the start of the Open Expert main, which had $500 up for grabs. Both Cruickshank and Yamamoto planned on cashing in on Sunday's three-quarter-mile race and were using tonight for practice. It may have been practice, but both riders really went at it for the duration of the race. Wick again moved into the top three followed by Triumph-mounted AMA Experts Rich Hayman and Darrell Triber. Cruickshank put it to 'em and went to home plate for another win and a "double demolition" of the main events over Wick. who got around Yamamoto. Young Troy Hedge also rode sensationally. Hedge, riding water-cooled MX machinery, handily topped the Mini A and I25cc A mains. Hedge's wins didn't come without challenge a~ John Mitchell chased all the way to the flag in I25cc action. rs-. ~ ..c S ... 0.. ~ ~ eJ).
