After taking the heat race with lit· tle trouble, Lind/Hart established their lead in the final right off the line. Defending National Champions Pete Essaff and Dennis Crueger ran second on their Kawasaki-propelled chair at the conclusion of a lap, fol· lowed by the Yamaha rig of Dean Cleeton Jr. and Robert Eng. By the second lap, the order of the (irst two teams was set, and the inter· est turned to the third-place battle between Cleeton/Eng and Ian Fil· lery/Brian Ceelen. Canadians Fillery and Ceelon moved their Yamahaengined outfit around Cleeton/Eng on the fifth lap. Things tayed close, and on the last lap, Cleeton/Eng made a successful charge (or third. Up front, Lind/Hart had a 15second lead by the halfway point, and after that they appeared to be taking it somewhat easy, finishing with about the same margin. The discussion off the track between the top two teams centered on the differgnces in their powerplants, the two-stroke Yamaha against the four· stroke Kawasaki. "The TZ engine makes our rig lighter and more pow· erful," said Lind, "And it allows us to drive it in and out of the comers, where Pete has to slide it." Essaff said, ".Hey, we're wishing for rain; that's our element. The weight helps us with traction, and the torque of the four-stroke motor is to our advantage when it's wet." Hannah went down before the end of the first lap and came around third from last. Liles led the next lap as Burnwonh dropped to second and then to six~. Suzuki Support nder Clint Hardick moved into second with Bailey third. Local hero Boo Sticher was having a good ride in fourth bringing the laDs to their feet. Kawasaki's Darren Rhoten was next over Burnworth, Hi·Point privateer Honda rider Eric McKenna and David McClain. McClain won the consola· tion race to get in the National on a bike with bald tires and no oil in the forks. Bailey took Hardick on the nDuh lap and the top three closed up %1 seconds ahead of Rhoten, Burnworth, Stichter and Bowen, up from way back. Bailey went by Liles over the big jump and took off for the win. Liles kept second, ~ut Ri~ Joh~ put in a phenommal nde on hiS works Yamaha to come from nearly last to third. Burnworth was fourth, then Hardick, Rhoten and Bowen. Hannah moved up to 14th by theend. Burnworth holeshot again, but Hannah led the first three laps over Burnworth, Bailey and Yamaha-'s Donnie Cantaloupi. Burnworth $,01 bounced completely off of the bike through a muddy dip and did a flying remount but Bailey was by. Hannah was running hard whm he stopped and looked at the rear of his bike. He kicked it and it restarted, but he pulled off the track, looking a very unhappy young man. Burnworth stayed close to Bailey (or a (ew laps, then Bailey slowly motored away for the win. Burnworth Slayed a safe second, but Liles thought he had third until Johnson mOlored up (rom another miserable start and took third with three laps remaining and stayed there; Liles was fourth. Cantaloupi picked up filth ahead o( Bowen, Team Tamm's JeH Hicks, Honda rider .Jim Taran· tino, McKenna and Flonda Yamaha rider Mark Murphy. Bailey was pleased. "I rode well today. I don't think I rode that much better than last week, but today I rode well all day and last week I rode well three-quarters of the day. Also, I got the starts. Next week I'm going in with a preuy good lead in the 250cc class so I can afford to hang it out a liule and go for the Grand National Championship. " Bowen was quite impressive in his debut, but he was not too surprised. "Racing as a Pro is quite different. I got a lot more tired, but I figured I could break the top 10, I just didn't know how well I would do." Results • 500: 1. ~ Br_ 3-2 (Hon): 2. Osnny Chs_ 5-1 (Hon); 3. K.nt . - , . " , 1-5 fKsw): 4.
