Ryan ZA.P.s 'em at WatsonvlUe few laps of the first round with, Nelson doing the chasing but losing time as the molO developed. The crowd loved Nelson's old blue enduro bike, but in the second round McRae. was stunning with a comeback to take second from the fading Nelson and Cahors, who was running preuy steady despite a firstmolO crash that left him with a lOth. Combined with the second-round third, he was fifth overall behind Andy Tessor. Ryan and the flying Suzuki 125 were no match for the rest of the tiddler Pros, with lots of crashing in trying but a wide margin victory for the 17-year-old speedster. One of the beuer baules in the first round went between Jim Cressa and Tyson Vohland, both Honda-mounted. Vohland worked hard lO get around Cressa, and Cressa worked at not lelling the kid around, but finally couldn't hold him off any more and on the last lap Vohland made a pass stick. Mark Nelson and Jim Cressa came outof the hole alongside Ryan in the second round, but only Cressa could keep the RM in sight for any time. Mike Johnson did the catch-up number and pressed Cressa hard enough for a pass and second while Cressa slipped back lO a sixth for a fourth overall behind Johnson and Steve Vlahos. By Bill Spencer WATSONVILLE, CA, JULY 31 Round two of Continental Motosport Club motocross under the Z.A.P. banner came off very well on a race track that had a 46 new watering system that was absolutely trick and made for great racing in the Monterey Bay area. Rick Ryan doubled in 125 and 250cc competition, while Jim Ellis smoked the Open class. The first 250cc Pro race brought the spectators to auention as 30 Pros went for the first corner. Jim Ellis on the Yamaha Support machine banged his way through and led the first lap with Ryan, Greg Pennington and Danny Turner in hot pursuit. Ryan and his stock RM wasted liule time in making up time and led from lap two, widening his margin with every lap while running lap times in the two-minute range. Ellis, Turner and Larry Coleman held the following riders at bay until Coleman slipped the Husky a bit, with Breu Cabors picking up the slack for fourth over Doug McRae. In the second round, it looked like a demolition derby in thefirstcorner, with bodies and bikes strung allover the comer. When the dust seuled, it was Ryan in total command and his Suzuki flawless throughout. Ellis looked good for second, with Coleman holding onlO third until his rear wheel brake stay came apart'and he drifted backwards. Doug McRae was riding the second round like a man possessed, and on the last lap he came in with a second while Ellis was barely running. Ryan took the big-buck overall, with McRae a fine second over Bret Cahors, who was fightng off a shoulder injury throughout the day. Ellis absolutely zapped the Open Pro guys from start to finish in both rounds, with McRae doing a 4-2 catch up for second in front of Jon Nelson riding his father's IT490 in fine style.
