Todd got underway but knew that he was going to have to work hard to catch up. He passed Duane Mapes over the doubles and soon flew by Westergaard. Then Peterson set after Jennings and squeezed by him. Jennings lost his balance and was shook up about being passed. He tried to regain his position and caught back up to Peterson. Jennings bumped into the Yamaha rider and fell to the ground. So it was Turner, Peterson, Jennings and Westergaard in the molO. Money-wise it was Turner, Peterson, Jennings, Westergaard and Murray. Daryn Walls (Yam), Carlos Saavedaca (Kaw), Betts and Keith Young (Sw) pursued. Before the end of lap one, Betts slipped past Saavedaca and a lap later Betts also snuck by Walls. Betts held the throttle wide open and set after Dale. Four laps later and Dale also fell prey t() Betts' fast pace. Betts then opened up a large lead which he kept as he crossed the finish line first. Dale took second followed by Walls and Young. Again, Dale jammed into the lead at the start of the second moto inches ahead of Walls, Betts and Young. The battle for the lead was tight. But, on the third lap, Betts went down after his front wheel washed out at the bottom of the downhill. He quickly recovered and recaptured the one position he lost, only to go down a lap later. At the halfway point, Walls finally found a way around Dale and took over the lead. With only two laps remaining, Betts did the same to Dale for second. Walls held on and took the win only a few seconds ahead of Betts. Dale took third followed by Young. Ephraim Benjamin (Kaw) put his green machine into the winner's cir- . cle after trading 1-2 scores with Mike Laquerre (Kaw) in the Junior Cycle class. Laquerre led all but the first lap in the first moto while, in moto two, Benjamin led from start to finish to take the tie-breaking win. A !I-!I tally gave Richard Geraghty (Yam) third while a 4-4 combo gave Adam Fiugerald (Hon) fourth. R.sults PEE WEE: 1. Mark Nlloon (Suz!; 2. Jon Plull 3. Mike SMlhln (Ylml. JR CYCLE: ,. (Hon~ Keefe keeps the cash at SMJC By T.rry Whytel ORANGE, CA, AUG. 6 Exactly one year from the date that Bill Keefe fell and broke his knee, he relurned to Saddleback in top form to take the overall win in the 250cc Pro class. HOnda rider Ed Arnet powered away with the first moto win as Keefe placed his Honda mount into the number two slot. Arnet had mechanical problems in the second round, however, and Keefe showed the pack the fast way around the long Saddleback track. Keefe's 2-1 score earned him the big payoff as Arnet took second overall ahead of Honda rider Dean Welsh. The combination of extreme heat and high humidity took their toll on the racers this week but Yamaha rider Scott Johnson kept his cool en route to clinching the Open Pro win. Johnson swept both moros despite tough competition from ATK/Rotax rider Gary Jones who followed Johnson to the checkers in round one action. Jones dropped from the race in the second moto with unknown problems and Bob Ashleigh went on to post a !I-!I score on his Husky to clinch second overall ahead of Yamaha rider Michael Hair. Honda pilot Jim Cobham topped the 250cc Intermediate class as he and Kawasaki rider Darren Sykes traded moto wins in close racing. Sykes took home the runner-up honors with Greg Fountain rounding out the top three on a Yamaha. Yamaha-mounted Bill Hair swept the Vet Novice event. Honda riders Bengl Johansson and Creg Preston kept the battle for the lead close with Johansson claiming second at the checkers in each moto and Preston placing third. R.sults OPEN PRO: ,. Langford leads the wayatAFM Riverside RR iW By Lori Tyson RIVERSIDE, CA, AUG. 7 Dave Langford walked away, wilh three first-place lrophies at lhe American Federation of Motorcyclists' race at Riverside, winning the Open Stock Production, Open Modified Production and the 600cc Super Street races. In the 600cc Super Street, Jim Poet led from the start but Langford stayed glued to his rear wheel and looked for a place to make his move. Finally, on the last lap, Langford outbraked Poet into tum seven to take the lead and the win. But Poet didn't take a cool off lap; he discovered his rear tire was flat as he crossed the line. The Open Stock Production and Open Modified Production were easy' wins for Langford as he went unchallenged and led both flag to flag. But Bob Reinen and Bruce McFarland put up a tough fight for second, with Reinen coming out ahead in both by the slimmest of margins. EarI Roloff also won his three races - 600cc Modified Production and the 75OccStock and Modified Production. In the 600cc Modified Production Roloff took a large lead and left the fighting to Poet and Ontario Moto Tech's Jim Vreeke. Roloff won it with Poet taking second-place honors after putting on a great show. Vreeke and Todd Brubaker really went at it in the 600cc Stock Production, leading a freight train of riders to the flags. By lap three Vreeke and Brubaker had succeeded in putting some real estate between themselves
