a tabletop jump in the spectators' area. Glover jetted by and had the first moto. Howerton was second a~ead of Chandler, King, Larson, Fmkeldey, Locey, Sun, Eaton and Burgett, who had worked up from a miserable start. Glover holeshot again in the second moto with Larson, Howerton, King, Burgett, Eaton, Tamm Racing's Dan COnway, Hettman and Sun behind after the first-lap shuffle. Larso'n took the lead on the next lap and King jumped to third. Finkeldey was the rider on the move as he was eighth a(ter a start outside of the top 10. He picked off a rider a lap until he was -into fourth. Larson led for only one lap before dropping from the leaderboard. First was good enough for Broc, who won here in '81, so he grabbed it and motored. King moved into second with Howerton third. Even though Howerton took a momentary tumble, the top three stayed the same to the flag. Finkeldey moved to fourth and a flat tire on EalOn's Maicoanda late-lap charge gave Sun fifth, Eaton sixth and Burgett seventh. The rest of the lOp 10 were Martin, Conway and Christian. Glover took the overall followed by Howerton, King, Finkeldey, Sun, Eaton, Burgett, Martin, Chandler and Conway. Howerton had hoped to narrow the points between himself and Glover, but gave up some. He said, "I made a couple of bad mistakes. The lapped rider in the first moto, then I )eft the soft track tires on for the second moto. Even Jill (Kent's wife) told me to change the tires. I was sliding everywhere, but Broc is riding really well. He's winning outdoors and in the stadiums. I'm racing with one of the fastest riders there is." King commented about the class th.is year, "It seems that if you don't get a start in the 500cc class this year, you're hislOry. I'm really hurtin' without the 45-minute motos this year. I got a start in the second moto, but Broc just kept pullin' on me." Chandler was taken lO the hospital after finishing third in the first moto. ~t,was thought that he had raced the !irst molO with a couple of his ribs .~ eparated from his breastbone. 1 26cc National George Holland was the first of two Suzuki 125s into the first turn in Ute initial small-bore molO followed b~ Yamaha Support/Answer Pro;: liucts' A.j. Whiting. The former Mini ~ tar is back up lO speed after a badly borken leg and is sitting in the lOp privateer spot [or the year. O'Mara Ward, Brian Myerscough and Mark Flesia's Colorado-based Yamaha were ¢ct. A bobble dropped Whiting to seventh on the third lap as Holland continued to hold off Barnett, and Ward began to challenge O'Mara. , 'Barnett got Holland on .the fifth lap, and two laps later Ward dropped Holland to third, where O'Mara moved in and passed him. At that JX>int the order read: Barnett, Ward t O'~~ra, Holland, Myerscough: 'Whlttng, Suzulc.i Support rider Rick , yan and Jim Anderson and his . upport Yamaha. he order was mostly set to the finish except for a tremendous late-lap ~drive by the O'Show. He caught }V'ard unaware on the tabletop jump It and leapt past in the air on the last ap for the second·place points. Ward rwas third followed by Holland, j,Myerscough, Whiting, Ryan, Andero spn, Team Tamm's Chris Heisser and"Empire Yamaha's Gene Gentsch. Barnett played the reflex game the best in the second moto followed by Yamaha's Ron Lechien. Lechien had gotten off to a bad start in the first moto and had the ~It securing his -. . . .. , . handlebars to the triple clamps lose its grip on things, costing him too much time to make up. Holland, 'Yard, Myerscough, Yamaha Support nder Karl Jordan, O'Mara, Heisser, Honda-mounted Ted Brady and Anderson rounded the top 10 at the finish of the first lap. In the first six laps Lechien got close to Barnett, then Barnett pulled away and Lechien pulled up close again. First Ward and then Myerscough moved past Holland and O'Mara moved into fifth place, leaving Holland in sixth. Except for Lechien snealc.ing into the lead for two laps, the top six were set. Myerscough put on a drive in the late laps that kept him out of O'Mara's grasp and brought him to within feet of Ward at the flag. Anderson, Heisser, Jordan and Ryan were the rest of the top 10 for the molO. After collecting his cash and kudos, Barnett said, "This gives me a nice lead in the Grand National Championship, and we might even win the I25cc class if things work out. Things haven't worked out all year, so maybe they will at the end. We've won five races and they (Ward and O'Mara) have won one each. That shows you who is the best. I'm going to win the rest of the races and whatever happens happens. If there is any doubt (about who is fastest) in anyone else's mind, there's no doubt in my mind." IBelow right) Devid Beiltry Mel to do elot of moving from behind. 260cc National Scott Burnworth's Suzuki was the first bike out of the firSl turn, bUl Hannah was in the lead before the completion of the first lap. Burnworth stayed in second with Yamaha's Donnie Cantaloupi, Tamm Racing's Mike Shoemaker, who dropped back to the 250cc class after struggling with a 480 most of the year, Yamaha's Support and Dirt Bike Magazine-supported "Gentleman Jim" Holley and KTM USA's Rod Keller proclaimed themselves front-runners. Honda's David Bailey and Johnson were way back in the pack Wilh Billy Liles, who was riding Wilh a sore and damaged shoulder. Holley passed Shoemaker for the only change in the top five until the fourth lap when Johnson got around Shoemaker for fiflh. The rest of the top 10 read Liles, Hicks, Bailey and Michl itsch. Both Johnson and Bailey were serio~sly on the gas and bolh sleadily ptcked up one place a lap until Johnson sat third and Bailey fourth. By that time Hannah had 20 seconds on Burnworth, but pressure from the two lanky opposing teamsters pushed lhe lOp four together until all four of the riders were within a 17-second window. Johnson went into second after stalking Burnworth for four laps. The crowd looked like a human tidal wave on the last lap straining to see if Bailey could get Burnworth on the lasl lap. The order ended up: Hannah, Johnson, Burnworth, Bailey, Cantaloupi, Holley, Hicks, Galveston Honda's David McClain Shoemaker and Petal uma Honda ride; Eric McKenna. Burnworth and his Steve Paulostune? Suzuki took lhe easy way out o[ the first turn with Hannah's BrianLunniss-wrenched Honda in second. Hannah went around Burnworth before the second turn, but Burnworth and Holley were both back by Hannah on lhe first lap. Fourth on back were Cantaloupi, McClain, Liles, Keylon, Johnson, Shoemaker, Michlitsch, Bailey and O'Neal USA 'Honda rider Bob Buffaloe. Hannah, to no-one's surprise, moved to second, but McClain was a surprise while moving past first Hol- ley and then Cantaloupi to grab lhird! Bailey was doing some heavy moving and things settled OUI on the fifth lap Wilh Hannah heading a column of Burnworth, McClain, Johnson, Holley, Bailey, Liles and Cantaloupi. A flat tire dropped McClain in the next turn and moved Johnson to third and Bailey was into fourth a lap later ahead of Cantaloupi. With those changes, the top five seemed set. Then, two laps from the finish, Han nah never came out of the woods. Burnworth moved into the lead with Johnson close. After bauling closely Wilh Hannah for several laps, Burnworth must have thought he had it made, but in the dip after Hannah had met his chain-derailed demise, Johnson went to the middle of the track where everyone, including him, had been going inside. He made his move as Burnworth slowed for the line and they dragged to the next lurn. Burnworth hil a lip 100 fast and went off the track, and Johnson cruised in for lhe win with Burnworth second for lhe molO and the day. Bailey was third for the moto and day. Cantaloupi, Holley, Liles, Hardick Michlitsch, Hicks and McClain, wh~ had faded with lhe flat, were the rest o[ the leaders. Holley, Hicks, Liles, Hannah McClain, and Hardick filled in th~ top 10 behind Cantaloupi in fourth. "It feels good to win, since this is my second race back after dislocating my hip," was Johnson's comment, Canta~oupi ~ev.ealed that he was riding wl~h an mJur~ knee and was "just tTymg to survIve." Bailey was not pleased, even though he gained points in the 250cc National Championship standings: "I sucked today. I'm real disappointed. The championship is important lO me, bUl I want to win races too." • Results 500cc: 1. Broc Glover I-I (V.m); 2. K.nl Hower_ 2-31~): 3. AI.n King 4-2 (Suz); 4. John Finkeldey II-"IKTM); 5.
