Although Suzuki's Mark Barnell finished second in the 20-lap feature and made up eight of the 10 points he was behind coming into the event, Bailey paid attention to the pit signals and finished a cautious sixth, good enough for the title. The final points tally read Bailey 420. Barnell 418. Barnell'S performance boosted him into the overall Wrangler Super Series lead, but it wound up Bailey's night. The Axton, Virginia, residem said of the evening, "It was the worst race I've ever ridden, but I did what I had to do to win: I've never experienced such pressure. I'm sure glad it's over, and I'm sure happy to win." Glover's win was of the runaway variety as he built upa 12-secondlead over the field. The Sladium MOlorspons-promoted event, the first in the Rose Bowl after 10 years in the L.A. Coliseum, drew a crowd estimated at over 67,000. Bailey pulled away slightly midway through the second circuit when Glover missed a shift, but then Glover reeled the Honda back in. The middle portion of the race saw Glover on Bailey all the way around the track as they steadily pulled away from King, who had a big gap over the next pursuer, Suzuki Suppon rider Clint Hardick. But on the SIXth lap, Glover bobbled again. Bailey lI~y> ~qt Glover,pulled ever, and Bailey had the heat win and a valuable lhree points. King finished third, followed by Hardick and Honda-mounted Andrew Tudor. . The order was approximately me same around the second lap, except that Lechien lost a couple of spots. His potential loss was even greater, because he came off the bike when he landed afler the double jump on the from suaighl. Magoo was easily pUlling distance on Keylon from the second lap on, while Reid appeared a comfonable third. Conway was holding off Yamaha teamSJers Lechien and Ricky johnson in the early going. On the fourth lap Keylon swled in a comer and lost five positions. O'Mara could not close significamly on Barnell, and the only change among the top positions was when Honda's Brian Myerscough passed Burnworth late in the race. They were trailed at a distance by KTM rider Kevin Davis and Honda pilot Steve Martin. Marty Tripes, ridinga Yamaha in a return from retirement, placed eighth and made a direct lr3Dsfer to the semis. The first comer of the third heat was busy, with Honda rider Kenny , I. f. Honda-moumed privateer Don Griewe was third initially, but behind him were a pair of dueling Kawasaki teamsters, Kent Howerton and jeff Ward. Ward broke into fourth on t;w three, with Howerton gelling past Griewe on the fifth lap. On that same lap, Ward overtook Holland for se. cond on a set of whoops. .
