The San Diego off· roaders turned out in force to inform the Commission of the problems in their area. The Commission toured Sycamore Canyon. Japatul Road. McCain Valley, and Miramar. After seeing the major lack of closein riding areas, the Commission di· rected staff to seek not one, but two sites for the users. The newly pub· Iished environmental impact study on Sycamore indicates that it is a good acquisition. without a lot of ecological hangups, and would be close to the major concentralion of the Green Stickie-registered vehicles in the county. The Miramar site has alrady seen a lot of off-road impact and is owned by the Navy. It has no nearby homes or businesses to complain and is bordered by a noisy freeway. Other Items covered were: I). The making of Ocolillo Wells a first·priority problem·solving area. 2). The requirement of all users to have registered. quiet vehicles when they enter a State Vehicu· lar Recreation Area. ~). The inslituling of day·use fees at Pismo State Beach. 4). And to postpone the Hungry Valley OHV Fair until Spring of 1985 to make sure all funding is in place. The next meeling will be held in Hungry Valley on September 2~. We regret the inconvenience to the people who came in for public input. We are trying to structure the meetings so that the testimony is heard after 5 p.m., so you can come in after work instead of missing a day's income. But please call in advance for the agenda! We need the public to provide us with pertinent data so we can build the parks as you need them, where you need them. MIKE BISHOP Vice-Chairman. Off·Highway Vehicle Recreation Commission 256 State SL Santa Barbara, CA 95101 805/965-9722 Auuiethana This letter is so overdue that I am embarrassedl I harken back to August last year when the World Speedway Final was held in Los Angeles and I hosted a tour party of Australian enthusiasts to the USA for a motorcycle.racing holiday. On behalf of the Aussies I would like to extend sincere thanks to a number of people who did a lot to make our trip that extra bit enjoyable - particularly Mr. Don L'Hereaux at Bell Helmets who superbly organ· ized a much-appreciated and very informative tour of the factory at Long Beach. Also. thanks to George Leonard and his fellow members of the Mt. Baker Motorcycle Club who organize flat track racing at Belling· ham in Washington. We Australians had never seen your Class C flat track racing before and it was our unanimous opinion that the meeting we witnessed at Bellingham was one of the real highlights of the tour. We watched in awe as Mickey Fay and the other riders thumped their monstrous machines around and we were overWhelmed by the fantastic hospitality offered by the American people up there at the Hannegan Raceway. George Leonard in particular couldn't do enough fOl' us and the fact that they had heaps of Aussie beer and even an Aussie flag on hand speaks for itself. It was of great amazement to me that when the Tulsa Nalional was cancelled last year, I had extreme dif· ficulty in finding an alternative meeting for the Aussies to watch. Fortu· nately George Leonard came to the rescue, being one of the very few organizers to heed my urgent need. While he is at the helm, Hannegan cannot fail to prosper. The Australian supporters also en· joyed the exciting speedway shows at Costa Mesa. San Berdooand Ventura and as a journalist who has covered speedway on every continent of the world, I can tell you that no where else at present does the fan get the value. thrills and pure show that is supplied in California at the motneIlL Speedway-wise.
