Faria good as gold at San Berdoo By Scott Daloisio SAN BERNARDINO, CA, AUG. 3 Crowd-favorite Mike Faria turned in a sterling performance, winning six of eight starts including the Scratch and Handicap mains as well as the match race, before a packed house at Inland Motorcycle Speedway tonight. After he easily handled the competition in his heat and semi, Faria got a tremendous gate from the pole to lead Buddy Robinson, Sheffieldbound Keith Chrisco and Tom Burba in the Scratch main. Robinson tried to ambush the leader on the back chute on lap one, but was outraced to the third comer. Faria apparently didn't like the idea of being challenged, said "Good-by" and ran away from the pack to win by 10 lengths over Robinson and Chrisco. The win marked Faria's fifth Scratch main triumph of the season at IMS. The popular rider from Pinole, California, riding the Shoei/Jim Busby ISTP Wes-Jake, turned in another near-perfect ride from the 40yard line to capture his first IMS Handicap win since opening night. Ex-Cradley Heath rider John MacNeil took an early lead from the 10 after winning his heat and semi. Ron Blanton immediately jumped into second, followed by Sam Ermolenko. Meanwhile, Faria was skilUully passing riders on the outside. On lap three Faria took Ermolenko for third. He caught and passed a stubborn Blanton at the white flag. Could Faria now catch MacNeil? Would he pass him on the outside? It was a thrilling win for all of his fans, with Blanton and John Sandona taking second and third. Faria's only losses of the night came in his Handicap heat and semi, both of which were won by Danny Becker off the 20. Ermolenko was second ahead of Faria in the semi, but was paid back when Faria beat him 2-0 in the match race. Stylish Mark Weaver (Good) turned in a fine ride to win his first IMS Division Two main of the season. Rocketing off the 10, Weaver took the early lead ahead of Robin Bourgeois and Andy Northrup. The order stayed the same until Tom Walton dove inside Northrup for third in tum three on lap three. Walton continued his charge and took Bourgeois for second on lap four. He set his sights on the leader, but Weaver turned in a picture-~ea performance and had the main all to himself. Walton stayed in second, with Northrup passing Bourgeois for third on the final revolution. Brian Speaks (Precision Performance Jaw) copped his first IMS Third Division main of the season, but he may have been overshadowed by the fantastic rim riding of Dennis Hall. Speaks beat Hall off the zero for the lead on the start, but the real action didn't start until Hall went to the cushion on lap two. He muscled his way through the heavy stuff, but couldn't get past the leader. In a style that wonld have made Jim "The Animal" Fishback proud. Hall went within inches of the wall in a spectacular show on lap three. Unfortunately for Hall he didn't get the job done. Fortunately for the fans he became more determined. On lap four he somehow managed to ride it in harder and was virtually picking up the front tire and putting it where he wanted as his rear tire slapped the wall at full throttle. All in all he came up short and was forced to take second behind Speaks, but he rekindled fond memories of Fishback and received a nice hand from the fans after the race. Results SCRATCH MAIN: 1.
