_.dee C Y m~nts 'cause there was an awful lot of taient sitting on the line. Chris Howard (Yam), however, wasn't too impressed and proceeded to soundly trounce everybody in both motos. The 250cc Amateur class was a lot closer race with Rob Engel (Suz) having a 2- I and Curtis Kent (Hon) a 1-2. Engel got the nod for the overall based on his faster ride in the last moto. The 250cc Novice races were almost a carbon copy of the Amateur raCes only with different names. This time the opponents were Steve Bebeca (KTM) with a 2- I finish and Marc Peterson (Hon) with a 1-2 tally. Bebeca got the gold. Paul Emerson (Hon) won both motos in the Open Expert class. but K,itk Bothwell (Hus) and Larry M~II (Yam) were a determined second and third, respectively. Open Amateur Barry Hill (Mai) had things pretty much his own way with backto-back wins, but Steve Abbot (Hon) and joe Terlizzi (Suz) hung in there for the two runner-up positions. Mike Esles (Hon) then proceeded to show the Open Novices the way home with his pair of wins. 1n the Over 30 group, everybody was winning in pairs! Dan Pike (Mai) t&>1< the Expert class with a I-I, Mike Drews (KTM) aced both motos in the Amateurs, and jeff Gary (Hon) also paired wins in the Novice class. ot to be outdone, the Over 38s plft up a few pair of their own with casey Folks (Hus) taking both wins in'the Expert class, Roger Welch (lton) doubl ing in the Amateurs, and jim Keeton cleaning house in the Novices. In the Mini classes the top riders for the day were Lance Taylor (Kaw) infthe 60cc, Scott Baker (Hon) in the 80 ,and Donnie Hansen in the loos. Brown's start in the subsequent heat was a carbon copy of the first, but that time there was no real pursuit. Cordova gamely attempted to compete but could not muster any real effort. Meanwhile, Bo Stegall was getting a lot of attention as he broke from the pack and mounted an attack on Brown's front-running spot. 'As the moto wore on, even as Brown was turning his hottest laps, Stegall appeared to be gaining ground. Even though he never posed any real threat, Stegall's performance was impressive. He ended the day with second place money overall, with Rusty Pipes third. Tony Nielsen, who had a lock on third overall, fell three laps short of his goal when he bailed out with a possibly broken foot. Results MINI BEG: ,. Chris POl/ue (Kew); 2. Ricky Robins (Kew); 3. Brown unbeatable at Lake Whitney Dyson and McCoy reel in Hillside wins By Joe Milian By M. Orr LAKE WHITNEY, TX, JULY 24 BOYD, TX,jULY 16 Relentless Roger Brown scored r.et another in an impressive string of wins today at Lake Whitney under the bristling Willie McCoy and Dodd Dyson captured victory circle for tonight at Mike Kidd's Hillside Cycle Park in Boyd. sun of late july. Brown's only challenge for top cash in the 250cc Expert class came in the opening laps of the first moto. The New Braunfels Yamaha pilot has an uncanny affinity forfirst place. His usual routine is to hang with the pack to the first mild lefthander and then streak down the inside to the mst real abrupt turn. While their momentum normally carries the other riders to the outside, Brown's tight i~ide position allows him to square the comer and exit in great haste. Today Nick Cordova followed a similar plan. Cordova stalked Brown £01 two-thirds of a lap and then passed in mid-air coming out of "Banzai Gulch". "It was really pretty easy. When we SlaTted up the hill Roger went outside and I went inside. When we came down I was set up real well and just turned on the gas," Cordova later related. Unfortunately, Cordova's world came crashing down around him a few laps later. "It happened so fast I'm not real sure what happened. I was fighting some ruts in those "S" turns and the bike just pitched me into a big bank," was Cordova's assessment of the error. Brown circulated for several laps before Cordova was able to rejoin the f~y. His physical condit~Qq ~rc;>hi: -o uIua taaa· john GladwiII came on strong in the first 250cc Senior short track heat for the win over Kelly johnson and David Fisher. The second heat saw Bill Herndon and Dyson contesting the lead with Dyson coming out in front at the flag. The first two in each heat rode the four lap trophy dash. Herndon got off the line behind but worked the pole to gain the lead by the end of lap two and take the win. Dyson took no chances as he took off for the first comer in the main. Dyson hit the turn in the lead with Fisher close on the outside and Herndon nipping at his heels. Herndon stuck close to the pole to pass Fisher on the first lap and tried the same style to work on 0 son. Dyson wouldii"'t give though anaHemdon couldn't get around him. Fisher stayed in third with Gladwill finishing in fourth place. In the 250cc junior short track main, Steve Miller got the holeshot only to lose the lead when Willie McCoy took over, riding on the inside, and McCoy didn't look back. jack Yost got a bad start and found himself back in fifth place. He passed Rocky Fivecoat to gain fourth on the second lap. then dove to the inside in the fourth corner to gain third place at ~he ~nd of lap three. Yost displaced 1-Jil!~W'J:aliWS:!lJ,Qj~ml!~iM~cWJ:...MiU the growl *' y IIuIca-Ca yaiUa•• fourth lap, but McCoy had gained a half a straightaway lead and there was no catching him. CORVALLIS, MT, JULY 10 The first moto of the 125cc Expert class was a real crowd thriller as two daring Expert riders, Honda rider Kevin Little Binkley blasts to Cycle Ridge MX win and Central Montana Yamaha-sponsored jay Mimyala paced each other. Little gotlhe jump at the start with Mintyala snorting right on his back fender. Mintyala kept a steady pressure on Little throughout as both fought for the lead. On a tricky tight turn, Mintyala cut too close to a tree and got slapped in the face by a low branch. With little more than a lap-and-ahalf to go, Mintyala took command and held on to get the nod from the man with the checkered flag. Positions were reversed in the second moLO, which started off with Washington state rider Curtis Clark leading all the way. Clark DNF the first moto but was clearly in charge in the second round. Little fell to the pressure applied by Mintyala and then determined high-flying Tom Krause (Yam) charged through the pack to capture third. Overall, the win was awarded to Mintyala, second to Krause and third to Little. High Countries' 125cc Amateur class drew spectator attention with Robbie Baker (Yam) taking the lead in the first moto. However, Idaho's jerry Kelly was out to win, and he did. The second moto was commanded by Robbie Baker with jeU Hengas pushing"liim closely. Kelly slid out on a slick comer, lost his place in the race and never quite caught upagain. Kelly earned enough points fromlhis race, and previous ones, to now move to the I25cc Expert class. The overall win wem to Baker, Hengas was second and Kelly third. Mini nov; 1. Jim _ ; 2. Den Chrilly; 3. cart McK_n. TI~2~i~~: 1. Mark Hancock; 2. Jack McCo""; 3. Results s=~~:. B rian Binkley; 2. Binkley swept both motos by healthy margins ahead of Darren DeLoach and Steve Kyle. Bobby Holbrook captured the win in the Mini Amateur class aboard his Kawasaki. Holbrook is steadily improving and soon will join the ranks of the Mini Experts. As the current point leader in the "B" class, he looks forward to changing his number plate and challenging some of the Mini Expert riders. In the 250cc Expert class a fired-up Boo Stichter held off a strong challenge by Stacy Cook to take the overall. The first moto was all Stichter. but Cook passed and led Boo for a couple of laps in the second moto. Boo managed to re-take the lead and hold on for the win. Cook finished second and jimmy Mitchell, aboard his Cagiva, ended up in the third spot. Albert Firestine gave some lessons on the sport of motocross as he led in both motos to sweep to the overall in front of Matt Lindsey and jim Mitchell. Lindsey chased Firestine all day long but was unable to get close enough to presem any real challenge. Results • ,. 80 B: 1. Rick Tipps (Vam); 2. Jason Miller ISuz). PEE WEE AM: 1.
