AMA/Wrangler Super Series: Round 23 Bailey takes point lead at Foxboro By Tom Kolnowski Photos by Richard O.Ubertis FOXBORO, MA, JULY 24 Team Honda's David Bailey wedged his Cliff White-tuned works bike into winner's circle at the Miller High Life Supercross at Foxboro's Schaefer Stadium and pulled into the overall point lead in the Wrangler Super Series, displacing Suzuki's Mark Barnett who recorded a DNF in semi-final action and failed to qualify for the main event. Kawasaki's jeff Ward finished second to Bailey in the 20-lap final after holding the lead for several laps. Yamaha's BrocGlover, winner of the Pittsburgh Supercross two weeks ago, finished third. 6 Originall y scheduled as a Saturday evening event, Foxboro was later moved to Sunday afternoon. Ward remains in third with 675. followed by Glover at 657. Honda's Bob Hannah. still recuperating from a wrist injury, sat out the event and holds down fifth with 640. H88ts Rains continued to fall as the first of four heats began, and Suzuki's Barnett and Yamaha's Glover came out of the first corner, a full ISO degree pivot, running neck-and-neck. By the next corner, several whoops away, Glover was cleanly out front with Barnett a tight second. Suzuki's Alan King, Kawasaki's Billy Liles and Suzuki's George Holland assumed the following three positions. After two of the eight laps, Glover managed to put Barnett 50 feet in arrears. with King. Liles and Suzuki's Scott Burnworth falling off the pace. On lap three, Barnett closed within three bikelength as Glover moved into lapped traffic. The track had developed deep ruts through many of the whooped sections, and playing f()lIow the leader became a popular. yet frustrating pastime. Barnett cut to the inside of Glover and found himself in the lead. The final laps saw Barnett pull out to a slim three bikelength lead and carry it through the finish over Glover. King, Liles and Burnworth remained in the following three positions. "I was going to pass anywhere I could." said Barnett. "With all the ruts the track is getting very tricky." Suzuki Support rider Ricky Ryan got the best start in the next heat. holding a narrow lead over Honda's johnny O'Mara. Suzuki's Clint Hardick and Bailey. Within a quarter lap, O'Mara nipped Ryan going into a banked sweeper as Bailey pulled a similar move on Hardick to secure third. At the two lap-mark.
