Riding on a track made very heavy by a thunderstorm only an hour before the race, they scored nine and eight points, respectively. The unluckiest rider was one 14 of the pre-meeting favorites, Shawn Moran, who holds the track record. Despite winning a race and finishing second in anothe.r, Moran tot;llled just seven points. When he failed lO score any in his last r,ide, it meant that the U.S. National title holder will uavelto the August 7lntercontinen- tal Final as a reserve. Moran held the same status last year, and did not get a chance to ride. The rain-soaked track proved too much [or the other American, Mike Faria. Though he gated well, Faria did not find the conditions to his liking and only scored one point. Faria did display the potential for future greatness, and could become a top scorer in the British League next year when he rides for the Swindon Robins. Faria's single point came when he finished ahead of last year's World Final runner-up, Les Collins.Sigalos fell in his first race after missing the start, and was under a lot of pressure in his remaining rides. While he bauled hard, he managed only second place in his next three rides. With six points and one chance left, "Siggy" was in a must-win situation, and he came through by defeating Peter Collins, john Davis and Faria for the three points he needed. The surprise winner of the event was Phil Collins, who amassed 12 points. Collins was beaten in his first race by two non-qualifiers, john Davis and Collins' brother Les. Phil, who dropped his other point lO New Zealand's Larry Ross, always revels in muddy conditions. His more-experienced brother Peter failed to adjust lO the conditions, oilly scoring three points and ending his run at this year's championship. The run-off for second place went to Kenny Carter after he tied with New Zealander Mitch Shirra at II points. Sigalos will be joined at White City by Lance King, who rode consistently through the evening even though he didn't win a race. King scored three seconds and two thirds for his eight points, with his runnerup placing in his final ride securing him one of the last two qualifying spots, along with former.
