On the mend
This letter is to update the progress
of Tim Aston, a l7-year-old 125ccPro
motocrosser from Biggs, California.
Tim was involved in a street bike
accident on March 19 of this year,
when a car ran a red light and hit
him, totalling the bike. As a result, he
had to have his right leg amputated
below the calf. In the five weeks he
spent in the Davis Medical Center in
Sacramento, he had to undergo eight
operations and used up 21 pints of
blood.
But now he has his prosthesis and
is doing very well. In fact, he expects
to be back out at the race tracks in a
few weeks.
We want to thank all the people
who sent cards, letter, flowers, placques and gifts while he was recovering. Our thanks also to the people
who donated back the entire amount
of blood. And our thanks to the many
people - there must have been at
least 50 - who come by to see him
and to stand by him the night his leg
was amputated. It's very difficult to
write everybody, since Tim received
over 400 cards during his hospital
stay. Many thanks from his parents,
brothers and sisters.

SXon ESPN
Those of you who have watched
ESPN for the last two years may
recall that in 1981 they showed quite
a lot of Supercross. They featured the
Kingdome, Silverdome, and Daytona
races; frequently showing reruns.
Then in 1982 the Daytona race was
the only Supercross shown. Now in
198!l ESPN has yet to show a single
Supercross.
Wondering why they s~opped
showing Supercross, I called ESPN
and asked. They said it just wasn't in
demand. So I asked what it would
take to bring Supercross back. They
told me if they had enough response
(calls, letters, etc... ) they would think
seriously about bringing it back.
So I'm asking you, no I'm begging
you, to write or call ESPN and tell
them you want to see Supercross. It
will only take 15 or 20 minutes of
. . .your. time: to ..sit down and write a
letter voicing your opinion. I believe
it is worth that, considering the possible benefits (sitting down in your
easy chair and watching some great
racing).
Also you might want to mention
that you would like to see the race
results of the Wrangler Super Series
on SPOTts Cenler. Here is their address:
ESPN, ESPN Plaza, Bristol, Gr 0601 6.

AJS/Metchless club
Our section of the AJS/Matchless
Owners Club (England) would appreciate a note telling all that AJS and
Matchless live.
There are over 2000 members worldwide and there is a spares scheme in
the UK. Wehaveover50activemembers in Canada and the U.S.
Dues for the North American section are $!l per year for 10 newsletters. Information for the NA section
and the UK parent club can be obtained from me with a self-addressed

The Canadian Vintage Motorcycle
Annual Rally, at Barrie, Ontario; the
Vintage Race at Daytona; the TT at
the Isle of Man all brought me back
to the good old days. Talking with
people who I used to ride with from
California in the early '50s and with
old timers who used to race in the
TTs in the '!lOs have given me a
charge of adrenalin.
Long live the sport.

Petro Tech goodies
We would publicly like to thank
the Prospectors Motorcycle Club for
allowing us to conduct a promotional raffle in conjunction with their
race on June 26, in Cinco. The races
were definitely crowd pleasers, and it
was nice to ride in an area again after
a l7-year absence.
We would like to thank all who
participated in our raffle for kits of
Petro Tech 2000 engine treatment.
To be sure we contact all of the
wim:lf;r~,. Y"~. would apprecia\e. ~Y-.•••
Maybe it's nit-picking, Thea, but J
disagree! When racers are ladies, mention should be made of their appearance and conduct. By ladies I don't
mean to infer women with modellike figures or tea-room charm, but
rather women who dress appropriately
(including a little showmanship) and
conduct themselves in a professional
manner. Agreed, interviews and articles would certainly help dispel misconceptions about women racers, but
as you mentioned we are a minority.
It's at the races, out in the desert and
on the tracks that the women - the
best and the beginners - are going to
be seen and judged. I sincerely beli~
that the better the impression we
make in appearance, conduct and
competence, the better our coverage
will be.

Sequoia: Do you cere? Pert Two
For all you trail riders out there
who ride Sequoia (Kennedy Meadows)
and all of you who haven't, but plan
to someday, let me tell you, this is the
most beautiful trail riding area in
California.
But this area is in danger of being
closed forever by several wilderness
addition bills in the U.S. Senate.
Time is short. This issue is to be
heard soon in the Senate and it could
be decided in the next two weeks.
There is hope, however. Senator
Pete Wilson isa man who could help
us. I have just returned from a meeting with Senator Wilson's staff. They
were very interested and receptive to
what we had to say.
What we must do now is flood
Senator Wilson's offices with phone
calls and cards and letters. Tell them
you are in favor of President Reagan's proposal of l.l million additional acres of wilderness in California. Tell them you are an off-road
vehicle user and that your favorite
areas: South Sierra, the Domelands
additions and Monache must remain
open to use.
The Senator's aides are very will ing
to help. so please call his L.A. office
at 21!l/209-754!l, or his Bay Area
office at415/556-4!l07. You can also
write his Washington, D.C. office at
Senator Pete Wilson, Senate Office
Building, Washington, D.C. 20510.
It's vital. Please do it now!
