So~tber. Call1or.la·Arlzo.a-SOutbern Nevada· Souther. CalIJ Western hotline George Bryce made it two Funny Bike class victories in a row when he downed Johnny Sands in the final after Sands' air shifter malfunctioned. Trett quick & fast in Connecticut Summer National Drags By Greg Guarinello COLCHESTER, CT, JUNE 25-26 Elmer Tretl, George Bryce III and Randy Mason were joined in winner's circle by Rick Stetson, Gary Godwin, Mark Povilaitis, jim Cooper, Dave Manero, Bob johnson and Tom Anglesey after conquering 40-mph head winds on Saturday and then riding to victory with the wind at their backs on Sunday at Connecticut International Raceway. After two other NMRA Nationals were forced to reschedule due to rain, most everybody on hand for the Summer Nationals was able to put up with the unusual headwind situation on Saturday. Sunday's weather was much better and what little wind there was had turned around to be a tail wind. Top Fuel eliminations opened up with Elmer Treu, who had run 191.89 mph into the head wind on Saturday, squaringo££ against the Suzuki fueler of Terry Vance. The VHR team was back on the drag racing trail during one of their brief days 0(( from their road racing program. They exhibited a bit of rustiness, though, and the machine spent as much time apart as it did together at the event. Byron Hines seemed to have the problems sorted out by the first run and Vance took a slight holeshot over Treu's Kawasaki. Elmer quickly reeled him in, though, and took the win with the low elapsed time, 7.39 seconds, and high miles-per-hour, 193.96, of the meet, to down Vance's game 7.67/173.74. In the other run, a pair of Danny johnson-prepped machines in the hands of Larry McBride and Paul Ray squared of£. McBride seemed to have problems in the burnout when a small piece of metal flew off the bike. After a quick throttle blip, everything seemed OK so McBride staged. However the metal piece turned out to be the keyway on the blower pulley and McBride's race was over when he ~o •• ••• • #. • tried to pull some power out of the motor. That left Ray with the other spot in the final. Upon seeing McBride's problem, Ray backed o££ the throttle and coasted into the final with a 19.22 second pass. As the final staged, Ray knew he had to get out first if he stood half a chance of beating Trett. When the two riders left the line, it was Ray out ahead with Trett in hot pursuit. It quickly became apparent that the race would belong to Trett as he passed Ray and stormed on for the win. Elmer took the Summer Nationals title with a 7.40/189.860ver Ray's bestoftheweekend, 7.81/184.80. The win wa Treu's third of the season. The Funny Bike final brought Honda-mounted john Sands and Kawasaki-mounted George Bryce III to the line. Sands pulled the holeshot and held the lead to past the halfway point of the strip, but his air shifter developed a leak and when john went for high gear all he got was an over-revved engine. Bryce took advantage of Bryce's problem and shot by for the win .. Bryce's winning numbers for his second straight Funny Biketitlewere8.IO/168toSands'll1lsing8.81/136. The Pro Stock final saw some trong competitors on the sidelines. joe Folgore had terrible transmission problems.all weekend and could not qualify better than sixth alternate. Bob Carpenter got as far as the second semi-final where he lost the closest Pro Stock race of the weekend to Dave Schultz. The final brought Schultz and Randy Mason to the line. Unfortunately, Schultz and his two-stroke red-lighted and the win went to Mason, who didn't know of Schultz' foul and went on to clock an 8.74/150. Other finals saw Rick Stetson score his ninth consecutive victory in Pro Comp when he downed Steve Molitor, 8.59/153.06 to 9.01/149.75; Gary Godwin won Super Modified over Frank Giordano, 10.21/127.29 to Frank's "sleepy" 10.06 (j ust .03 o££ the National record) at 127.29 run; Mark Povilaitis topped Tom Galligan in Super Gas when Galligan broke out. Povilaitis ran a 10.58 to Galligan's 10.38; Competition Eliminator went to Jim Cooper over DougJames when Cooper clocked a 9.17/133.13 to james' 10.01/129; Dave Manero Went home with the Modified Eliminator win when Steve Drake broke out of a 9.22 dial-in by .05 seconds and Manero ran a 9.41 on a 9.30 dialin; Bud Johnson won Stock Eliminator when Darren Ru££o red-lighted; and Tom Anglescy took his first win of the season in Super Eliminator when he beat John Rogers. .• 4.4 ,. Vreeke vrips two winsatAFMWIIow By Lori Tyson ROSAMOND, CA, JULY 10 Jim Vreeke was top rider in the 600cc classes today, winning both the Stock Production and Modified Production at the ~~ American Federation of Motorcyclist's double points meet at Willow Springs. In the Stock race Vreeke battled Jim Poet, but after a protest, Poet was disqualified for no sidestand bracket and Aaron Post took second. Aaron had been fighting Todd Brubaker for third until Brubaker's bike started to disintegrate piece by piece. First the seat fell o££, the one side cover, and shortly afterwards, the other sidecover. Todd didn't give up. He rode seatless until his wiring went up in smoke and he was forced to quit. In 600cc Modified Production Vreeke dueled with Earl Rolo££ (who rode despite injuries sustained earlier when he was taken out by another rider) before taking the win by the narrowest of margins. Behind in third was quite a conflict between Frank Mazur, Doug Toland, Joe Montoya and Mike Williams with Toland barely taking it at ~e.line over Post. Montoya and WI1ltams _ ~# ............ ••••••• 1 were side by side at the finish with the nod going to Williams. Williams had quite a day. He finished morning practice with four broken motorcycles, but had each of them ready for their respective races, taking trophies in 750cc Super Street and 750cc Modified Production. Bernd Koegler, currently number one overall in the points standing, was one of eight riders who went down in the first race of the day 750cc and Open Super Street. One rider tried an inside pass in tum two that didn't work and took out himself and three others - Earl Roloff, Koegler and Ken ApplanaLp. Denny Doherty went on to win the race amidst an obstacle course of fallen bikes. Terry Statum took the 750cc win. Kirk Ochwat was critically injured in the 450cc Stock Production race after going o££ the track in the same tum, hitting the berm, and getting airborne.
