~ ILL Lind/Hart waltz to Sidecar win By David Edwards MONTEREY, CA, JULY 17 Rider Bruce Lind and passenger Jack Hart choreographed their way to a record-setting one minute, 16-second lap of the twisty Laguna Seca circuit en route to winning the Sidecar class and moving into the lead in the national point standings. After a brief opening lap excursion into the din while passing another team in tum four, the duo had the race to themselves after the first lap and maneuvered their Was£o-framed, Yamaha-powered rig to a commanding 16-second lead at the finish. Their record-breaking lap was just nine seconds slower than the times turned in by the fastest Formula One riders. "The bike ran just beautifully," Hart said after the IO-lap race while partner Lind was off winning the Formula One consolation event. "We've been working for the 16 (lap record) all weekend. It was a little hairy on the lirst lap, the racing was very close. But after that, no problems." Finishing in second were the 1982 national champions, Peter Essaff and Dennis Cruegar. Mired by a fourthplace start, Essaff/Cruegar worked hard to get their outfi t through traffic and broke into second place in the dosing laps of the race. By that time, though, Lind/Hart were long gone. Tied in points with Lind/Hart going into Laguna Seca, Essaff/Cruegar now find themselves four points back with two races left in the season. "We got a bad start, plus our motor was running real bad the whole race," explained usaff. "It's one of Eddie Lawson's old Kawasaki motors and has a lot of time on it. We were lucky to finish the race." Rounding out the top three was the veteran team of Win fried Hopp and Bill Alston. Proving that age hasn't slowed their reflexes much, the team grabbed the holeshot at the start and held off Lind/Hart for the better part of the first lap. Slowed when one of their spark plug wires came adrift, Hopp/Alston then battled with EssalflCruegar until the defending champs put a neat pass on them coming off of tum eight to take second place away.
