had whillied the dirrerence LO less than twO seconds with three laps left. Lechien had fallen a bit orr the pace back in third. Myerscough passed Ward on the final lap to nail down fourth. Barnell managro to hold off O'Mara for the win, keeping about eight bikelengths of insurance between. Lechien, Myerscough and Ward filled out the tOP five. "Mark's arms pumped up toward the end of the moto," said Barnell'S tuner, Jerr Clark. O'Mara took control of the start of 'the last moLO, with Holland and Barnett jockeying for second. Holland managed lO pass O'Mara going over the first hill. Barnell was forced LO wait until a half lap later LO make a move, then passed both Holland and O'Mara in a du ty sweeper on the next hillLOp. Lechien moved up LO third before the 'end of the first lap, wedging between Holland and O'Mara. Ward and Myerscough were having another battle over fifth. The next five laps read the same .for the top five. Holland fell back LO fourth on lap seven, with Ward mal(inga successful pass at the crest of a hill to knock him back LO fifth. O'Mara was hanging tight lO Lechien and powered past near the finish line area. Not long after, disaster struck Barnell in the form of a crash on a downhill. After remounting, Barnett's bike came up with a seized crankshaft and he was left in the mechanic's area LO watch O'Mara ~o by. O'Mara conunued perfect for the last four laps. Lechien and Ward were running a tight 2-3 until Ward passed to pull orr a second place finish behind O'Mara. Lechien, Holland and Myerscough clocked in for the next three spots. "I'm pumped! I can't believe it, especially when I saw Barnell," said O'Mara. "It gave me a second wind. I really didn't know what happened to him, I thought he just went down. My mechanic gave me the sign that he was out and I couldn't believe it since he has already had a DNF this year. I'm going for the championship and I'll take it. I tried not to make any mistakes after that and kept it real smooth. Lechien and Ward weren't catching me at all." Lechien's pair of thirds gave him second overall behind O'Mara. "I had a couple of good starts, but I didn't get a holeshot in either one," Lechien said. "I was there on top and had a pretty good shot at winning, but I had a little problem. I tried real hard in the first part of the last moto, then something happened to Barnell. When' he went out, I tried LO catch Johnny. I think I could've won it, but ltried so hard in the beginning of the moto to stay ahead of Johnny that I didn't have any steam left later on. I ess second overall isn't too shabby. " 260cc National Team Honda's Bailey was ready to win. "I don't have any excuses for not winning today," Bailey said before the first moto. "I've been able to get back to running, and both of my legs f~el good." The moto belonged to the "Little Professor" from the beginning, with Team Suzuki's Scott Burnworth and Yamaha Support rider Donnie Cantaloupi following through. Bailey was unable to pull ahead of Burnworth by much more than a second per lap and had a six second lead after seven full laps. Burnworth and Cantaloupi were in a holding pattern for second and third. Hannah and Honda-mounted Dan Wallace ran 4-5 for a few laps, until Kawasaki's Billy Liles pushed into fourth behind Cantaloupi. Liles was having problems with his bike which were caused by broken chain adju ters. Liles was gingerly attacking the cour e, but managed LO hang in at fourth. Bailey kept his leading act going for the rest of the moLO, and came across the finish line for his fir t National moLO win pointing to his front wheel. The tire had gone flat in the final laps, and Burnworth had closed LO wi thin 150 yards by the end. Cantaloupi and Liles kept their third and fourth places, respectively. Team Suzuki's Clint Hardick moved up LO fifth toward the end of the moLO. The final molO provided more close racing than the opener, as Burnworth led Bailey and Cantaloupi through the first sweeper and into the'downhill section. Honda's Kenny Keylon and Jerr Hicks came through at fourth and fifth, with Liles sixth. Burnworth built up a several bikelength lead after a lap, and Bailey appeared unable to catch him. On the following lap, Bailey began to tighten up on Burnworth, but was unable to make the pass until lap five on one of the down ills in the finish area. Cantaloupi was still hanging close for third, but cut to the inside at the botLOm of the hill and nabbed second from Burnworth. Liles wa running fourth behind Burnworth and rapidly closing. The rest of the pack was nearly a quarter lap behind the LOp four. . On the next lap, Liles had trimmed the difference between himself and Burnworth LO a bikelength. Bailey was running out front and making a few precious seconds over Omtaloupi on each lap. Liles flew past Burnworth going through the starting grid and assumed third place. Cantaloupi was having rear brake problems, and a half lap later went down allowing Liles to slide inLO second, six seconds behind leader Bailey. Burnworth also skated around to recapture third. With onl three laps left, Liles was (Above left) Winner Johnny O·M.... (4) le.d. Ron Lechlen (224). George Holland (10) .nd M.rk Barnett (1). (Above) Scott Burnworth Ia.d. B.lley In the 260CC; cl•••. The finish saw Bailey with a nine-second lead over Liles, followed by Burnworth and Cantaloupi. "In that first moLO, Burnworth was there and pushing hard. I just had to break the ice. I figured if I was going to win one moto, I might as well win them both and the overall," said Bailey. "Liles was ~euing close in the final moLO. He's gotten prelly hungry, has been training hard, and looks good. Hewaspullingupon mea few laps and I LOld myself that I couldn't let this guy beat me. I wanted to win the whole thing. When I got into some lappers he got really close, but things went better for me than they did forhim. I'm pleased with the way I rode. I needed a week 0(£ after Texas, and I feel that it helped me. I had four weekends in a row that I rode bad, and needed some time away from motorcycles. It all paid off, I got good starts and rode smart. I wish my dad could've been here to see how I rode." Liles was siuing ~t third overall behind Burnworth in the final results. "The chain adjusters stripped out on the start line in the first moto, leaving the axle lo free-wheel about the swingarm. I just rode real conservatively and fini hed the race." The engine cases on the bike were cracked after the moLO. Bai ley has taken over the lead in the 250cc point standings, knocking Hannah back into second with a 14 poim deficit, 309 to 295. • Results 5CXkc: ,. Broc Glover (Yam) 1-1; 2.
