TEN YEARS AGO T.C. Christenson roared down the Beech Bend drag strip in Kentucky to set a new Top Fuel record. Christenson's double-engine orton covered the quarter mile in 8.71 seconds at 166.97 miles per hour. A CAIIEL PRO SERIES NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP JULY16-17, 1 LAGU R Gene Romero pulled a last-lap pass on Triumph teammate Gary Seollto take a narrow win in the San Jose Mile National. Triumph riders took the first four places as Frank Gilles· pie and Dick Mann followed Romero and Scott home. MONTEREY, C........-- Yamaha's Pierre Karsmakers went II to win the opening round of the Inter-AMA Motocross Series in Utah. Kawasaki's Brad Lackey went 4-2 for second, and Bultaco pilot Jim Pome· roy posted a pair of thirds for the same overall. Husky's Heikki Mik· kola was top European at founh overall. Ron Pomeroy won the 500cc Support class on a Bultaco. Dick Burleson rode a Husqvarna to take the overall win in a two-day ISDT Qualifier in Laurelville, Ohio. Puch rider Tom Clark scored a second overall. Mike Bast had a hot week of speedway racing in southern California, winning three out of four Scratch mains and finishing second to Rick Woods in the other. Bast also won one Handicap main during the week. The Mammoth Mountain Motocross drew its usual fine field. In the 125cc Pro class, Penton rider Tim Lunde took home $500 for winning the class, as did Bultaco rider Doug Grant for winning the 250s. Ken lahrt gave the Spanish marque another win when he nabbed the Open money. Splash-splash was the name of the game as riders tackled the water crossings of the annual Viewfinder's Grand Prix at Indian Dunes. Bultacomounted Bryan Breker won the Open Expert class, while Jim Fishback did in the 250s on a CZ. In the Lightweight Expert ranks, Cordis Brooks claimed the win on a DKW. Bob Endicoll and Tom Casey rode a 570cc Honda sponsored by Action Fours to win a 250-mile road race at Sears Point. Ed Unini and Jerry Pels finished second overall on 750 BMW. Triumph rider Randy Skiver took ·the Expert main event in a TT at Graham, Washington. Fellow Triumph rider Jim Einarsson finished second after early leader Steve Baker (Yam) dropped out with bike troubles. Maico rider Bill Payne nabbed both the 250 and 500cc Senior classes at an AME motocross at Indian Dunes. Honda rider Randy Nordyke was second in the 250s and Maico pilot Mike Todd turned in similar results in the 500s. Rick Hocking won the 360cc Expert class of a short track at Fremont Raceway.
