CA, J U N E 26 America's domination of World Championship motorcycle sports slipped another peg from last year's high as Swedish Yamaha factory rider Hakan "Carla" Carlqvist displayed total dominance in th e first mota of the Nissan U .S. Grand Prix of Motocross. Yarnaha 's Broc Glover found him- 8 self in the di sta stefu l, to h im , position of second in th e first moto. Carlqvist had to sett le for secon d in th e concl uding moto, however, as th e " Golden Boy" di splayed th e style he has sho wn while ga thering hi s man y cha mpio ns hi ps. Brad Lackey was on hand as peren n ia l crowd favorite on a su p port Yamaha and put in an excellent ride 10 fin ish fifth overall in spite of hi s lengthy absence from racing. Brian Myerscough mopped up the 250cc Sup port class in a two-mote romp. The win was hi s fir st ma jor o ne on a big bike. 250 S upport Honda 's Ph il Larson was reflex man of the day in th e 250cc Support class by virt ue of double holeshots over Honda 's Myerscough. Myerscough had th e lead in the first rnoto a t th e completion of th e in iti a l lap. Lar son ' s production Honda lost th e damping in the rear sh ock on the fir st sect ion o f bumps a nd he swa p ped his wa y slo wly back 10 ninth pl a ce. Suzu ki's Gary Bowman, in h is debut in Na tiona l co m pe titio n on a 250cc motorcycle, , &e t ~l t;d, in to second .as Myerscough virt ua lly disappeared. Kawasak i's Bill y Liles moved into third by lap four ahead of local Honda rider Bryan Maloney. Suzuki Sup port rid er Clint H ardi ck mov ed from back in the pack to mov e Maloney 10 fifth while Bow man and Liles had a back-and-fourth battle for second. Liles took over second for good after several laps of having th e advantage o n th e uphill sections, while Bowman, a Carlsbad regular, wa s fast er on th e downhill sections. With Liles' move into seco nd th e top five were set. The scenario for the second start was identical 10 the first, only this time Larson's shock blew worse. H is feet spe nt more time off of the pegs tha n on, an d he ra n over one of h is feet while out of shape before rnoto's end. Maloney a n d then Hardick played runner-up in the second moto, Liles and Hardick battled for four laps before the green bike sprouted ah ead. The top th ree cleared away from Maloney, and Bowman came up and nipped the Honda rid er for fourth in the last two laps. Myerscough took the win by a margin of 30 seconds over Liles, Hardick, Bowman and Maloney. Myerscough was his usual quiet self after the rac e, saying, "It went really well, th e Honda works bike is the best bike I've ridden. I would have liked to have gotten both holeshots, but once I got past th e front-runners, I just rod e a t a co m forta ble speed." His "co mforta ble" speeds were yielding laps times identical 10 th e winning 500cc bik es.
