Jaak Van Velthoven finished up the day seco nd overall on a factory Yamaha. England 's John Ban ks recorded a third overa ll on a Ch ene y-BSA; still th e . best-ever four- stroke finish a t th e USGP. Kawasaki's Brad Lackey turned in th e best Am eri can finish with an eigh th overall , a nd John DeSoto fini sh ed 10th on a CZ. The 175 and 125cc wins went to Penton riders Bill Uhl and Jim H o llander. respectivel y. Suzuki rider Doug Garrison was a double winner in a Fresn o, Califor nia , scra m bles. Garrison won both the 200 and 500cc Expe rt classes. In a scram bles a t northern California 's Lodi Cycl e Bowl , Steve Eklund bested fell ow Suzu ki pilot R ay Huff and Yam ah a-m ounted Mike Allen in the 500cc Expert class. Eklu nd 's brother Rick fini shed second in th e 350cc Novice class, ridin g a Bultaco. In th e Fren ch 250cc MXGP, Yamaha's Hakan Andersson a nd Mai co 's Adolph Wei I traded moto wins a nd runner-up finish es, with Andersson getting the nod on ela psed time. American Jim Pomeroy fail ed to finish either moto as the crank on his Bultaco went out in th e first round, and his spare motor seized in th e second. Out in the desert, Bul taco-rno u n ted Doug Wi nchell pulled off his first overall win in th e Desert Vipers hare scrambles. Heavyweight class Expert T erry Davis was second overa ll on a Yamaha , and Trailbi ke Exp ert Larry Roeseler buzzed his Harley -Davidson Baja in for third overall. The first- ever AMA Youth Divi sion Nationa l Championship MX was held in Olympia, Washington. In the lOOec Junior cla ss, Scott Henry was th e winner, trailed by Mi ke Lunsden and Dan n y Chandle r.
