JUNE 18 It took Dennis Briggs two tries , but he was able to capture the Scratch main and the lion 's share of the purse Saturday night at Ridgeaest Speedway. After winning his heat and semi, Briggs (Bus by Racing Godd ) i n herited the lead o n lap two when lead er Ti m McCa sland took a spectacu la r tumbl e in tu rn four. Briggs headed into turn two wi th th e lead when o ne of th e co rner flagmen dropped a red flag th at was unauthorized by refe ree Dennis DeT emple. Briggs slo wed as the o the r two remaining rid ers sped by. Briggs pu lled to th e in fie ld a nd presented hi s case to refe ree DeTemple and, after a qu ick m eet in g wi th o fficials, it was decided to run the race over. On the res ta rt, i t wa s Br ig g s , McCa sland a n d J im Cla usman h i tting turn o ne three a brea st, wi th M ike Maz za can e in ch es beh ind, search ing for a place to pass. Briggs and McCasland went wheel to wheel un til McC asland dropped to third o n lap two. The 22-year-o ld from Costa Mesa quickl y mo ved back into seco nd and began an all-o ut assa ult o n Briggs ' lead. Usi ng th e o u tsi de so he cou ld len gthen th e tr ack a nd run hard er into the corners, McCa sland pulled even wi th Briggs o u t of tu rn four o n th e fina l lap in a NAS CAR -style sli ngshot maneuver. T he drag race to th e line was set, bu t McCa sland su ffered a momentary bobble, a llowing Briggs to ca p tu re th e win by o ne bikelen gth. Cla us ma n br eezed home third w ith Mazza can e taking th e wra p up. An dy No rt hrup (J& M Trop h ies J aw ) moved from th e 30-yard lin e to win th e H andica p main o ver Ed Castro. Last week 's wi n ne r, J eff Spri ngman , was mo ved back to the 20, bu t sti ll managed to cap tu re h is h eat a n d semi a n d 'Iooked to be th e favori te enteri ng the ma i n. On the sta rt Springman wa s out firs t o ver Northrup a nd Castro. No rthrup found a hole a nd sq ueezed th rough for th e lead in tu rn four o n th e opener. Ca stro took th e seco nd sp ot on lap tw o , but h e wa s unabl e to catch Northrup who was en joy ing a perfect ride. SCOll Sivadge (Ami/ Sam my Tan ner Di st.lJones Wes) looked awe some agai n as h e swe p t th e H andicap portion of the p rogram to wi n h is seco ndstra igh t IM S ma in event. From th e 20-yard marker, Sivadge beca me the im mediate leader and was o n ly serio us ly challe nged o nce the entire race. Bra d O xley moved into seco nd and fought o ff th e repe at ed challenges of Ala n Christia n u nti l Lance King sa iled into thi rd o n lap th ree. O xley the n held o ff Kin g a nd appeared to have a second pl ace fin ish in th e bag wh en Kin g ga ve h im a tap o n th e fin al circu it th at sent Oxley from seco nd to fifth o n th e p aysh eet . Kin g gave Sivadge hi s o n ly cha lle nge in turn th ree o n th e fin al lap , but th ere was no den yin g th e pe rso na ble vetera n h is third checkered flag o f the eveni ng. Wh en he moved ou t fro nt it was ti me to watch the o the r riders battl e for second. Tom Waho n , who like Dw yer was co ming fro m the 20, ended up second beh ind Dwyer. w it h T im McCa sland , also off the very o bvio us ly crowded 20, taking th ird. Suddenly Vand er ham 's motor sounded a s though it wa s breathing fir e and was 20 horses better than everyo ne else's. Actually his muffler !ell off and he received the dreaded black flag.
