It appea red that O 'Mara a nd L ech ien bo th went by Barnell at the same tim e on the eig h th lap, and O'Mara led for a la p before Lechien took over for the duration. Barnell was held to third, wh ere he fini shed both motos. Ward took fou rth from H olland after mid-race, and th e top five soon incl uded Myerscough in the final order. H olland was sixth followed by Whiting. Lechien apparentl y d ecided to simpl y domin at e th e second moto as he led from th e sta rt and blistered to so me of th e fastest laps of th e day. Barnell wa s next, and by th e secon d lap he was tra iled by Myerscough, Mark Flesia, Wh it ing, Ward, J a ck. son a nd O 'Mara . Ward and O 'Mara stayed a bo u t 30 yards a part and moved up ra pidly, but Myerscough gave Ward third for free when h e hit a led ge th a t flatten ed both his fro n t rim and tire. O 'M ara filled righ t in behind Ward at fo urth. H olland moved into fifth from a poor sta rt but did not look like h e had enough stamina to co nt in ue ch argin g in the h eat. The fo ur riders ahead opened u p a large ga p that gr ew to more tha n half a lap by race's end. Flesia had a hold on six th fro m th e sixth la p on. Myerscough rode to seventh with th e flat for most o fth eway. The first four riders were sp read a t th e seven-la p ma rk , but Ward had reeled in Barnell by lap 11a nd passed him by lap 12. Ward conti n ued hi s drive right to th e back fender of Lechieri' s Yam aha with two laps to go in th e fina l mota . Th e Kawa sak i p ilo t held it on in-a sweeper near the start straigh t and sh u t the door on Le chien. Ward rode th e last lap for th e mo ta win and seco nd overa ll. Barnell was thi rd a nd O 'Mara fourth. ,i l Ielt real good. Everything seemed come together for me. My bik e has been run ning real well th is week and 1just felt real good o n th e track ," was ho w Lechien felt abou t it, " I got good sta rts a nd held m y lin e a nd d id real well. " Ward felt h is problem had been sta rts, " I had to come from l l th or 12th in both mot os. On th e ceme nt starti ng pads my timing is a ll o ff. 1 judge the gate well, but on th e ceme nt it's not how yo u judge th e gat e it's how much tra cti on you get that' s im portant. It messed me up th e whole race. 1 pulled points on ever yone but Lech ien but he's wa y beh ind. I'm making a lillie cu shion on Barnell a nd trying to close on O 'Mara. I'm not too upset a bo ut m issing th e o verall. I'm going for the cha m p io ns h ip." 10 250cc H onda 's David Bail ey had th e gu nfighter 's reflexes in the first m ot o as he led th e 250cc showdown 10 the first turn and roosted smoo thly away. Local sta r Roger Bro wn put h is Big T ex Yamah a into seco nd a head o f Kenny Keylon, Yama ha Su p port rider J im H olley, Burnworth, Ca nta loupi a nd Dave Hollis' facto ry KTM . Brown d id a good job o f holding ba ck Keylon till he let the Flo rida H onda rider by o n th e fo urth lap . Holley, wh o was sufferi ng fro m a severe flu , was fading in th e heat, Bro wn dropped back a few posit ions a nd Ca n ta lo up i went down briefly. That sh u ffled th e o rde r but let Ba iley clear away o u t front. Keylon was in seco nd for two laps befor e Bu rnwo rt h went by, th en Liles, wh o had been doing some o f the best movin g o n the tra ck , p icked h im o ff for th ird. As L iles closed on Burnworth , bot h ride rs seemed to close sudden ly o n one la p as they more th an cut Bail ey's lea d in hal f. In actu a lity, Bail ey had fallen o n a straigh t and sweat a nd dust foul ed h is goggles. Ba iley said lat er , " O nce 1 took my . goggles o ff 1 might as well have pu lled over and let Liles by. 1cou ldn ' t see a thi ng. 1 was try ng to hol d hi m o ff with my eyes closed." L il es moved steadily closer and executed a bea urifu l o u tside- to-inside pass in a long swee pe r for th e lead o f th e last few laps. Bailey rem a in ed a stro ng seco nd over Burnworth, Keylon, Ca n talo upi a nd Bob Hannah. H annah, ridi ng with th e wr ist he inj u red th e previous week, was a moving demonstrat ion o f th e smooth lin es as he rode nearl y o ne -handed. Jim Tara nti no and Eri c McKenna were next on th eir Hondas. Beh ind the m, Brown was the last rider on th e same lap as th e lead ers. H e started a la p down , but he j umped on the track behind lea der Bu rnworth and rod e to a ninth p lace finish at mot o 's end. L iles moved 10 fourth by lap th ree a head of Keylon and Carter Yarnaha's Kirk Spen cer , a local rider . McKenna pu t togeth er his best ride in a National as he moved his Petaluma H onda into fifth . L iles p rov ided th e rem ainder of th e drama in th e mot a as he reele d Burnwo rt h in. Team ma nager Roy Turner said tha t th e stra tegy was not for Liles (a hold even though he had th e overa ll. H e needed th e points si nce H an na h and Bail ey had low- score da ys, a nd th e race could move Li les to a cha m p ions hip position. Lil es' first comment to his mechanic was, " Ma n, am 1 hungry." H e la ter added th a t he enjoyed every minute o f it.
