Yama moto led o ff th e lin e, p u tting hi s Yamaha into th e lead followed bv Novice T im Stu ltz an d brother Rusty Yam amoto. Ron rode in full control a hea d of Stultz, wh o was looking for a way around th e TT spe cia list. Yama moto took th e win ' followed by Stultz, Rusty Yamamoto, Ron G inn a nd Tracy Collins. The 500cc Expert main saw both Yamamoto and Cruickshank graci n g ro w one positi ons and set th e stage for wh at looked to be a classic showdown . Cruickshank cranked h is singl e into turn on e followed by a firedup Yamamoto on a 495YZ motocross machine. Cru ickshank 's ' ma chinery was full-tilt flat track weaponry, while th e MX-based bike of Yamamoto used up a ll th e track in pursuit. Ph il Hanby and Kenn y Graves were bumping for th e third place spot until Hanby p u t th e hammer down an d took control behind the Cruickshank/ Yamamoto battle. Cruicksh ank co pped th e win and the cash that goe s with it o ver Yamamoto with a good, hard ride. Yamamoto, in hi s third and fin al main of th e even ing, was bound an d determined to put th e stops on ri val Cruickshank in the Open Expert main event on 500 to 750cc machinery. This race was for.money as well as the: presti ge. Regardless of AMA classificatio n, th ese g uys go for it. . Both riders snagged a p re tty good share of th e $500 on hand fo r th e Experts. Irwin discovers gold at 49'er Enduro By Jim Bowman PLACERVILL E, CA, J UNE 5 Despite problems dealing with a poorly marked course, Interlink/] & K Cycle Inn Hondasponsored J eff Irwin found his way to th e low sco re o f nine points to win th e Distri ct 36 49'er Enduro , hosted by th e Polka Do ts 'M iC. So many o f th e rid ers had trouble finding th e course tod a y, th at some of th em su gges ted Irwin don at e th e Hi-Point Red Dot tir e he won back to th e club to be used as a co urse marker. Second o vera ll was Open A cla ss winner Eddi e Diaz (Cycle Gear /Karl's Motor s) wh o would have been happy to see a no ther checkpoi n t on the co urse. CA, J UNE 3 PORTLAND, OR, JU NE 2 Even though th ere were only 200 riders at th e Sacramento Raceway Friday night motocross , a ll 200 must have been An other gr eat night of motocross unfolded again this week a t Portland International Ra cewa y with one old face an d one new face in th e Pro winner 's circle. Kevin Jansen (Dime os Gym/Beaverton H onda /Chuck Sun Apparel ) pilot ed his CR250 to his first overa ll victory this year at PIR via two second pl ace fini shes, while Tim Michlitsch (Kawasa ki SupportiEastsideKawasaki/ AT K/ H R P .) bagged the 125cc honors with a 2-1 tall y. Jim Anderson and Michlitsch went to work early on in th e fir st l25cc moto with stro ng-ru n nin g Grayson Hart a nd Doug Lange in the next two spots. Mi chlitsch held the Yamaha Sup port rider until the fin al lap wh en Anderson sli p ped p ast and cru ised to th e win ahead o f Mi ch litsch. Hart put in an exce lle nt ride, holdin g off Lange and takin g third, while Jon Buyas finished fifth . The seco nd ra ce found Mich lit sch up front with Anderson quickl y moving into secon d, only to hav e hi s r ide en ded during lap six with bike p roblem s. Buyas made th e most of the o p port u n ity taking second, with Lange a nd Mike Klettke in third and fourth. Michlitsch led Bu yas, Lange, Klettke and California 's Sh awn MeConn when the chec kered fell. Th e 250cc class found Jan sen fin- th e "cream o f th e cro p" because each a nd every rac e was fast and furious. Ed Minton wrapped up th e l2 5cc Pro class a n d Dave " Wildebeest" Wood sewed up th e 250cc Pro compet ition. Minton gass ed his Yamaha to wins in both I25cc Pro motos, H e hol eshot th e first moto a nd kept the throttle ca ble taught for the en tire seven lap s. Dave Coupe was th e first of four Hondas to follow th e yellow bike past the checkered . Cory Cantaloupi, Steve Aren a a n d Mik e Wenzel, a ll CR-m ounted, rounded out the top five. Eric L iddell th ought he and his Suzuki co u ld ru le th e second moto, bu t he d idn 't cou n t on "Mauling" Minton a nd hi s banzai berzerkedness. Min ton sn ared th e lead a nd pulled a way as Wenz el moved in on Liddell a nd began to pressure. Meanwhil e, Coupe had zoomed fro m sixth to fourth a n d was sha do wi ng Wenzel. T he n , for no ap pa rent reason, Wen zel's front end kn ifed under an d he su ffe re d a se r io us over-the-bars, c h ec k-in - the-c lay cra sh .
