HRP ) a ll claimed a hea lthy sha re o f th e $3000-plus p urse. Burgett too k th e 20-rider O pen class whi le Mann in g took the 30-entrant sma ll- bor e class and Michl itsch placed first in the 250cc class wit h a win o ver 3i riders . Ro n Su n started his day off with a holeshot in the O pen class alongside H o n d a -m o u n ted Arne H e u m a n . Idaho Ya ma ha Support rider Warren H ickman and Bob Buffa loe were trailing th e pair. Sun ex tended hi s lead with Mike Larson picking up th e pa ce and passin g three riders to move into second. Burgett had a bad start, bu t by la p five was past everyone exce pt for Sun . Hickman was riding a strong moto in th ird a head of Larson Hettman a nd Ma rk J oh nstone. Manni ng wasted no tim e getting to th e top spo t, pulling a small lead over MichIitsch, Thornton. Anderson , McGill a nd Ostriem . It looked like a possible repeat o f th e previous week s Mt. View race with Mi chlitsch traili ng Man n ing. Bu t Thornton, a lo n g with Anderson , both got past th e Team Green mount and Anderson then put on one o f h is patented come-fro m behi nd charges w ca tch and p ass Manning. His lead was sh ort-lived though. as bik e p ro blems set in during the second-to- last la p and allowed Ma n n ing to take the win . T hornton came in with a second and Michli tsch was third. Michl itsch blitzed the 250cc class wi th a double-rnoto sweep over some tal ented riders . After ta kin g the start a hea d of R.W . Fay gra bbed th e lead, with Can -Am ri der Ch arlie Barkman a nd Ca mpbell h ot on h is heels. Fay went wire to wire while the Can-Am duo swa p pe d it o u t for seco nd unt il Barkman p u t th e hamme r down. Each of th e th ree main events was marr ed by th e " red flag syn drome ." The Novices ran two laps unt il a huge p ile-up ca used th e race 10 be haulted . On th e sing le file res tart it was Bobby Walters leading Dunlavey, Todd H agmann a n d Mike La wre nee. Dun lavey got the nod wit h Lawrence a close th ird, followed by a Ha gm a n n /Walters/ La nce Stro ng th reesome in side-by-side configuration at the fin ish . Resta rt s a lso plagued the J unior main event which had threetries.O n the fo urt h tak e it was J eff Harsh a hauling into th e lead o ver Bennett . Don Wilson a nd Dan Cordell. Harsha o pe ne d it up on Bennett , who is yet to be bea t a nd th e dice brought th e cro wd 10 life in a ntici pa tion of some one fin all y beat in g h im . That was not to happen as H arsh a went DNF on lap five to give Bennett th e lead with Wi lson. Ron Adams a nd Ravis Babcock gu n n in g for posit ions. Wilson was 10 g ive Bennett h is closest run for th e mon ev an d fin ish a bikelen gth behind for second , with Adams taki ng thi rd . Babcock earned fourth by moving Dan Brunner to fifth with a close Chris Fitzhugh/Dave .W!lj t: in g war goi ng o n behind. The Expert main even t was n oth in g short o f spectacu la r. Fa y had th e lead position but th e race was red flagged wh en Frank Word a n d th e duo of Wincewiczand Ca m pbell went down in a heap. Word , McD aniel a n d Sco tt Miller were in a tigh t pa ck wh ile Fay a nd H urst went a t it for th e lead.
