The next two riders to slip into th e semis were Alain Cu sson, yet a nothe r Quebec rider. a n d former Canadian Supercrosschamp Dennis james, now recov ered from kn ee injuries and surge ry. Gibson a nd Pederson made sure th at th e suspe n se would la st until the start of the final. as both took clear- cut wins in their respectiv e semi-finals. Gi bson transferred to the fin al in front of Hofoss and Yamaha Motor Canada-sponsored J eff Surwall , from Illinoi s. Pederson again won over Bigelow. who led Meenan to th e wire. B.c. H onda rider Tim Krogh found a place in the final by winning the la st chance qualifier ov er Darren Sharuga . It was a heartbreaker for Pat Bastedo who had led th e race until a riding mi stake dropped him to seven th pl ace. H alf a lap into th e fin al, Ped erson had hustled his way into th e lead and Canadian motocross history books. where he will be rem embered as the first to h ave won a Supercross for th e maple leaf flag .
