The next two riders to slip into th e semis were Alain Cu sson, yet a nothe r Quebec rider. a n d former Canadian Supercrosschamp Dennis james, now recov ered from kn ee injuries and surge ry. Gibson a nd Pederson made sure th at th e suspe n se would la st until the start of the final. as both took clear- cut wins in their respectiv e semi-finals. Gi bson transferred to the fin al in front of Hofoss and Yamaha Motor Canada-sponsored J eff Surwall , from Illinoi s. Pederson again won over Bigelow. who led Meenan to th e wire. B.c. H onda rider Tim Krogh found a place in the final by winning the la st chance qualifier ov er Darren Sharuga . It was a heartbreaker for Pat Bastedo who had led th e race until a riding mi stake dropped him to seven th pl ace. H alf a lap into th e fin al, Ped erson had hustled his way into th e lead and Canadian motocross history books. where he will be rem embered as the first to h ave won a Supercross for th e maple leaf flag . It had been Bigelow aga in sprint in g a head a fter the first co rner, with Pederso n a nd Qu ebec cha m p a nd Cana di an number two rider Pi err e Co uture right a longside. Pederson had a 15 seco nd lead on Bigel ow whil e Gibson was pressuring th e Michi gan Yamaha rider. On lap eigh t. he was by him. riding hard while Ped erson had put him self on cru ise. G ibson. out of shape at moments. could do n o better than cu t th e Canadi an 's lead to some five seco nds a t th e fini sh . On the next to la st lap. Gregoire got by Surwall to tak e fourth pl ace . th e best ever by a Quebecer o n h om e _ loam.
