The two are riding for Monten in U.S. Nationals. The contestants will ride two man-made courses with each rider timed from start to finish . The riders with the best first day scores advance to the finals on day two. Lackey's competition in this year' s GP will be tough - from both sides of the Atlantic. Americans have won here every year since 1979. Lackey is though. if memory serves correctly. the only rider to compete in the Carlsbad USGP since its incept ion. And. since the event inception. no Russian competitor has ever raced the event. There are two such riders on this year's entry list. John Cook will be holding a pair of speedway schools in California within th e next few weeks. T he first will be June 25-26 at the Ken Mae1y's famous goos e ra nch in Co ro na, and fordeta ils o n th at school, ca ll th e Mael ys at 714/ 735-0540. The seco nd school wi ll be held Jul y 3 a t Auburn in northern Californ ia ; details on tha t o ne can be had by calling Jeff Co la r a t 213/4241205. Both school s, according to Cook, will co ncentra te o n riding, machine p repa ra tion and ri der professiona lism. Video taping will be done at each school as well. Ron Wood has gone through the AMA homologation process. and t he 500cc four-stroke Rotax en gine he distributes will now be referredtoasa "Wood-Rotax. "ln addition. 'W ood is now building frames for the engine. " W e' ll be pretty close to supplying a complete motorcycle. " said Wood . "The frames w ill come complete with a seat and gas tank. We'll be bu ilding half mile and TT frames for the Wood-Rotax engine at first. and we have plans to produce at road race frame for the engine." Along with the homol ogation an nouncem ent, Wood also made public a contingency p rogram for his engine. In a June 20 phone conversation Lackey seid. "The pressure's off. I don 't have to worry about tho"; 'sacred' points the way the guys coming over here will. I can treat this as a one-race deal; if I fall down going for the lead. I fall down. I can be a bit more wild than I've been in the past. going for the win and seeing what happens."
