Going three-for-four is a good day even for Rod Carew, so when Clark Jones (Yam) returned from an injury to Carlsbad after a year's absence to win three Continental Motosports Club motos and take second in the fourth, he had people wondering' if his last name wasn't really Kent . . Jones started the Open Pro class with a holeshot followed by Dean Welsh (H on) a nd Brad Lackey. Lackey's A-Trak 'ed Can-Am was the onl y bike that could match Jones' pace, and th e pair began separating th em selves from th e pack. Lackey remained abo u t two seconds behind Jones all the way home. Welsh held off Vince Poblano (Hon ) for a n impressive third. Jones beat the crowd through the first turn again in the second heat, leading Welsh and Poblano. Lackey started deep in the pack, but took th ird on lap three and passed Welsh for second on the seventh. The rough track too k its toll on h is rear shock, and the cr ippled bike was soon back in fourth where it finished.
