In th e May 18 Cycle N ews, I must say m y eyes o pened when I read th at " g o offi cial " letter b y Bob De Miranda. It has been better th an a year since I penned a letter to y~>u about trying to get a class for sen io r citizens, In th e response I wa s referred to as a septuagenarian, ,,:hich I th~ught was a diny word until I looked It up. But now I am referred to as a n "Old Geezer." In my younger days an o ld geezer was an old coo t who hung around the blacksmith 's shop with tobacco juice drooling in the corn~rs of his mouth. The same always disgusted me ~s. a lad. So, Bob. I .a m going to visu you. and that IS a promise. LO U BOUSCAL D-36 #74B Takes offense... I take offense to the article in Cycle N ews Western Hotline in the June 8 edition, "Mason builds win at Blythe MX ." by Pam Hardin. namely, .h er referen ce to th e 80cc Intermed iat e class. To m y knowledge a ra ce co ns ists of riders participating. n ot injured riders who go one lap just to qualify for th e NMA Nationals. Apparently Ms. Hardin is more co nce rned with who is not racing as opposed to who is racing. It wou ld be nice to read ?ut the riders who wer e out there glvmg their a ll to win. not th e riders sitting on th e sidelines with injuries. We all respect i n j u red riders, but cr edit should be given to those who are riding and participating. Ms . Hardin. I feel th e terminology " free of distraction " does not a p p ly to m y so n Lance Barnett . H e has previously bested the riders mentioned in other national series races. Perhaps you should do yo ur homework. Also. it wou ld be nice to see the total results of the races, including the final results for the NMA Qua lifier. MICHAEL BARNETT San Diego. CA Is a rider who spends the time and money to ride injured. roen if for only one lap. to qualify for the final eve n t he has worked for all year. an y less a co m petitor than th e rider w ho has the skill and fortune to remain unin jured througho ut th e seaso n? Ms. Hardin has instruc ti ons from th e editors to severely lim it the length of her stories. She tries to m ention as man y riders as possible in the lim ited space allowed. We ask her to use her judgement to decide what is newsworthy. The missing results were an editorial mishap. not the fault of Ms. Hardin and are in the Results section of this issue ...Editor. Border to border trail As reponed in Cycle News. the California Statewide Trail P lan is abo ut to be presented to the state O HV Commission. A draft of this plan is w hat was presented at the recent publ ic meetings I made two unique proposa ls that wou ld make the p lan easier and quicker to implement. . The first is to create a new class of motorcycle and license that would be in between the cu rrent enduro/Green Stickie bike and th e dual -purpose/ street -legal bike. Of course this class of vehicle could not be used in cities, on freeways. or at night. but they co u ld be used on rural county roads. which would make long distance loops ea sier to create and make gas. food and lodging access more practica l. The second proposal is to immediately create a temporary trail sys[em using the best ex istin g routes a lo n g th e proposed corridors. These temporary routes would be scouted by volunteer committees, who would report them [0 th e state so that the state could publish them. Many tem porary routes wou ld be open toOHVs, but some would require dual-purpose bikes for highway interconnects between trails. This proposal was warmly received by EDA Wand Hank Ortmann fro m the Par ks department. In o rder to show th e Commission that th is plan is practical. I am looking for volunteers to h el p me docum ent a border-to-border route using the best existing open trails, dirt roads. and when necessary. paved roads . I need h elpe rs from Alturas to Tecate who cou ld scout 100- to 200mile sec ti ons. If you are interested. (Continued from page 3) open to all li censed AMA Pros. but amateur riders holding an Expert classification and having reached the age of 16. can get a $40 ProAm license which allows them to compete w ith the Pros w ithout sacrific ing their Amateur status. A Pro-Am rider can get up to 25 of the 40 advancement points needed to transfer from Novice to Junior. and up to 40 of the points needed for the Junior to Expert jump. In addition to the Pro classes. wh ich will be 250cc Novice Pro and 500cc Junior Pro. there w ill be 250. 500cc and Vets amateur classes . For more information. call the following number (which was printed incorrectly in last week's Ascot ad) , 213 /316-1291 . Pro-Am licenses will be available at sign-up. Off-road vehicle enth usiasts, especially those w ho like to ride in the Seq uoia National Forest, o ught to be a ware of the Bun o n Wilderness Expansion Bill . House Reso lu tio n 1437. which is currently before the Co n gress. The bill calls for several wi lderness areas where O HV is use is currently popu lar. Those wilderness addi tions are ca lled Monache/ So uth Sierra. Do mela nd Addition and Scodies. All have varying amounts of OHV use at present; hard ly q ua lifying the areas as wilderness to begin with. Senator Alan Cranston has supported the Bun o n wilderness proposals in th e past. so it would be a good idea to write California's other senator, Pete Wil son, in Washington, DC. 20515. The AMA and the California Association of 4WD Clubs are working to ha ve these areas deleted from any wilderness legislation. Exactly one year after his horrifying accident in Baja that eventually cost him his low er right leg, off-road star Bob Balentine is still proving that he has what it takes. Balentine rode the f irst day of the Trask Mountain Two-Day and turned in a very respectable score. However. possibly the lack of competition made its mark and Balentine was too stiff and sore to ride the second day. Earl ier in the year. Balentine rode both the Quicksilver National Enduro and the Spur. Texas. One-Day Qualifier. Good to see a good man back. H o nda -m o u nted Joey Dun lop won the Formula One race at the J u ne 6-11 Isle of Man Tourist Trophy. R id in g an 850cc water-cooled H o nda V-4, Dunlop romped to a 30-second win over Mick Grant (Suz) , seuingan unofficial lap record along the way of 115.34 mph. •
