HosPITal STOP: AMA Expert flat tracker John Burnett took a nasty tumble in his qualifying heat at last month 's San Jose Short Track. The crash left the 21-year-old Burnett with a left femur broken in five places. In an ironic twist, San Jose was to' be John's last race before retiring to become a ma chi nist. He is now recuperating in Fresno's St. Agnes Hospital, and since he faces 6 -8 weeks in tract ion and the possibility of some co mplicated operations, we're sura John cou ld use a few words of encouragement. Red-hot Pro Novice Chris Carr conti nued his winning ways in a June 5 AMA D-36 Semi Pro short track at the Yolo County Fairgrounds in Woodland, Calif, Carr won the trophy dash, the 250cc Expert main, and the 250cc Handicap main. IN MEMORIAM: A cerebral hemorhage claimed the life of Shirlee Bagnall on May 24. She was 58 . Shirlee was involved in the motorcycle indust ry most of her life, with her father Hap Alzina serving as both an Indian and BSA distributor in the western U.S. She and her husband Bill p ublished Moto,cyclist Magazine from 1965 to 1971. Shirlee is survived by her mother, her husband. two children and a brother. IRS An AMA-appointed appeal board consisting of Tote Grey, David MeCarthy and Charlie Watson met on June 5 in Louisville to hear the fin al arguments on Ricky Graham's appeal of his black- flagging at Sacramento. The same board will meet to decide the o utcome of Danny Chandler's appeal of his Saddleback disqua lification.
