Leni Faas, who recent ly returned from a month in England, fini shed in second with " Mag ic" Mike Curoso riding home with third place money. Tommy Walton (2 KenchulWalton Roofing Jaw) backed up last Friday's win at Costa Mesa by capturing his second IMS Division Two main of th e seas o n . Com ing in as a reserve, Walton won his heat race off the 10 and trailed Ed Ca stro, off th e same ya rd line, at th e start of the main. Walton forged ahead a t th e end of th e first la p with Tim McCasland taking seco nd at th e end of th e seco nd revolution and setti n g hi s sig h ts on th e class "C" Jun ior pla te holder. U nfortunatel y for McCasland, Walton rode lik e h e wa s h eaded for a p arty and when that is th e ca se there's n o ca tch ing him. McCa sland hung on for seco nd with Castro sta king hi s cla im to third. David Hancock (Sch wa rt z Racing J aw ) made hi s fir st IMS appearance in two years a n d easily o u tclassed the field in Third Divis ion. After H ancoc k took his h eat from th e zero h e ca me back a nd ran a way with th e main , followed by Jim Cl au sm an and Ri ck Vanderh am. David Hancock, up to Auburn for ' th e first time from Costa Mesa, showed the northern California promoters that Division One is where he belongs. He placed second in his Handicap heat, holding the lead for four laps, until Rocky Robinson got past him on the last turn for the checkered flag. Hancock ca me righ t back to win h is semi, taking th e lead from Robinson on the second lap. Pat Linn then moved into seco nd , letting Hancock feel so me real northern Cal iforni a competition. Hancock held on for the win, a nd a transfer into th e main event. Hancock got a good start out of th e gate, as Linn and Ron Sweeton made a few hearts stop as they battled it out side by sid e for seco n d, while H an co ck, whether he kn ew it or not, reall y had nothing to worry about. H e was smooth, cool a n d in control with a good lead. Prince and Yarro w co m p le ted th e field. At the fini sh it was H an cock , L inn , Sweeton, Prince a nd Yarin th at order. Yarrow all the way at Napa By Jann Houston NAPA, CA, MAY 28 The holiday weekend brought cool weather with a th reat of showers, but things warmed up quickly as another night of speedway got under way at the Town and Country Fairgrounds in Napa. Duane " Do It" Yarrow made it a night of wins on the Scratch program tonigbt: raking-home. ·h i ~ 'seco n d' . In th e main , Yarrow claimed th e lead on th e first turn, co mi n g off th e line from the number two spot. Ron McGill, on the pole, was second, with Paul Orlandi third and H arlan Bast Jr. fourth. The " race" was betw een McGill and Orlandi, as th ey were si de by side on every turn, Orlandi riding ou tside, a tte m p tin g to take McGill a t ever y opportunit y. Th e chance j u st never ca m e. Yarrow to ok th e checkered flag, as McGill h eld on for second by inch es. . Look ing a t th e Handicap consola tion even t, a late comer to th e rac es would ha ve sworn it was the main event. After a red-flag restart, ca use d w hen A n dy Gilbertson a n d Ron McGill got a little h ead start , H arlan Bast Jr. went down o n turn two in th e seco nd la p. Dennis Rob inson was foll owing a nd had no cho ice but to " ba ilou t" onto the in field in self defen se, co mi n g to h is feet in a bo w to th e a udi ence, typical of th e Robinson sense o f humor. With Bast in th e p its for ca us ing th e restart, th e race was on again , wi th no lack o n thrills. It wa s Yarrow in th e lead with Pat Linn on hi s rear tire, showi n g no mercy. On turn four in th e fourth lap, with Lin n o n th e o u tside a nd Yarrow on th e pole, " Choo Ch oo" Robinson came from out of nowhere between Linn a n d Yarrow to take th e lead, a nd hold it for th e win. It was a thriller! T he Handicap ma in event was a n exact opposite fro m the consol at ion, as it began with three riders, Ron Sweeton, Dennis Da vis and Craig Elstins, on the zero. Ken Gray wa s out at th e sta rt with m echan ical problems, Elstins got th e gate a n d . held th e lead to the finish , although Sweeton never ga ve him an y room for error. Denn is Davis was third. In th e Division Two main lfi-yearold Mik e Parsons held a stro ng lead for the first three laps, but on th e fourth lap lie was out with bike problems, and it was suddenl y a tight ra ce between Bill Calicura and a n o ther lfi-year-old, Steve Hill. At the finish, it was Calicura by half a tire, claiming hi s second main event trophy a t Napa this seaso n .
