... California Novice Chris Carr scored w ins in all three Texas races . Herndon, Carr best Dallas AMA Regional indoor short track By Frank Harrison DALLAS, TX; MAY 21 While Honda-mounted Billy Herndon ran 'away with the Junior/Expert class, California Novice Chris Carr (C-A) continued his winning ways in the second night of Mike Kiddpromoted. Budweiser/NDSpark Pl ug-sponsored indoor short track raci ng. The crowd at the new Dallas 30 Reunion Arena was somewhat larger tha n the preceding nigh t's crowd, although still disa ppoi nti ng du e to very poor local press coverage and the presence of one or two tornados in the area. The j unior/ Expert heats were won by Herndon. Char lie Orr. Todd Ratliff and Ru sty Gourley to set the stage for the two semis. The first saw veteran J.R. Rawls grab the holeshot to mark his return from retirement. bu t a crash called for a restart. On the second try Herndon was fastest a nd left Ra wls and Gourley to contest second . followed by jeff Davis. and Mark Hall. At the fin ish it was H erndon, Gourley. Ra wls and Davi s. The second semi was a smoothaffair with positions decided early. Orr took the win . followed by Ratliff, Gene Fisher, Kris Arme nt rout and Scott Adams. After Hendon took the trophy dash he received a five-foot tall Budweiser/ ND trophy from the lovely Miss Budweiser, Mary Gehr, it was time for the mai n event. Herndon grabbed the holeshot on his NavaiCastrol /jack Sisemore/MKR-sponsored entry, but when two riders made a charge for the same space, the resulting crash brought out the red flag. Herndon repeated his first start. with Fisher and Gourley battling for second. Ratl iff. Armentrout and Rawls ran fourth through sixth. In the end , Courley triumphed in his fight for second and followed Herndon across the line. Novice heats were won by Tubby Dotson , Carr. and Duane Duvall. In the first Novice semi. Carr. Dotson and Dan McConnell transformed thernselves into a leading trio and pulled away from the pack. finishing in tha t order. The second semi saw Raymond Huddleston lead it into turn one, with Don Strome and Duvall on his tail. Again, the top thr ee held their positions. In the main event, it was an exciting start with all 12 riders jamming into turn o ne. Carr's jorgy's/ Hi- Point/ TV Service center entry had the lead coming out of the turn , followed by H udd les to n, McCo nn ell . Do tso n , Strome and Duvall. T he excitement mounted as Carr, Huddleston a nd McCo nne ll began lapping traffi c. McConnell charged into second at about the same time as Duvall went down . The finish order read Carr, McConnell and Huddleston. Kidd cakewalks to Texas win By Frank H. Harrison FO RT WORTH. TX. MAY 20 Mike Kidd went for broke promoting an indoor race at the domed Tarrant County Convention Center, but the weatherman didn't cooperate. plastering torn ado. hail. a nd high-wind storm warnings all over the Dallas/Fort Worth met roplex area" Despite the fact many fans stayed home. Kidd didn 't go home broke .Irom racing as he won everything there was to win - heat. sem i, trophy dash. and the main over a top field of 32 junior and Expert entries anda Novice field of . more than 20 entries. ' The program started off smoothly with the nine qualifying scratch heats running straight through on the conventio n center's polished concrete £loor without incident. Then things settled down to bu siness as three Novice regular heats were run with only one restart in the second heat. These hea ts were won respectively by Chris Carr. Du an e Du vall and Raymond H uddleston. The fi rs t two j un ior/ Expert hea ts were won easi ly by Kidd and Bill y Hern don . However, the start of the th ird hea t saw a pi leup in tu rn one between th e two quickest riders, Bubba Ru sh and Odell Da vis, ca usi ng a resta rt. T h is tim e Rush got the holeshot an d kept it to the fini sh . Hea t number four was won by j eff Naramore a nd the stage was set for some real slam-bang action through the semi s and mai ns. In th e first Novi ce semi . it was Duane Du val into turn o ne, followed bv Carr, McDonnell , and Ran dall Whi snant. Whi le Ca rr was working h ard on Du vall , Ti m H am pto n cra shed head on into th e gra ndsta nd wa ll, stopping the race, bu t apparently was just sha ken up. On the restart, Carr q uick ly gra bbed th e lead while Dall as Ba bcock, McDonnell an d Du vall contested second . th ird an d fo urth. At the fin ish it was Car r, McDonnell, and Du vall. The second Nov ice sem i had Ra ymond Huddleston gett ing th e holeshot, wh ile beh ind h im a bat tle between j eff Hard er, j ason Desouge, a nd Keith Overby raged o n . T he fin ish read Hudd leston , Deso urge, and Overby. The first junior /Expert semi ran smooth ly from start to finish with the gr oove firml y in th e con tro l of Bill y Herndon , wh o had th e lead a t th e fin ish . foll owed by j eff Naramore, a nd Kris Arm ent rou t. The second junior/Expert sem i sa w Mike Kidd ta ke a firm lead. with Bubb a Ru sh o n his tail and SCO lt Adam s working ha rd o n R ush, followed by Phill ip Cu lver a nd j ohn j ohnson . Adams fell, ca using a shu ffle a nd bv th e finis h it was Kidd, Rush, j ohnson . a nd Culver. The troph y dash ha d Kidd, Rush. Herndon , and th e lon e Novi ce Cl iff Carr on th e line. At the fini sh it was Kidd, Herndon, Rush a nd Carr. After the race Kidd picked up hi s own trophy from Miss Budweiser. Mary Gehr. The Novi ce main was a total disaster. but at the start it was Ca rr taki ng a commanding lead as expected, followed by H uddl eston, McDon nell and Duvall. Sudde n ly bikes were tear- . ing up ha y bal es o n every turn a nd th en , when leader Ca rr wiped ou t on the stra ig hta way. starte r Phil Dyson halted th e race. The ca use of th e melee ? A leak ing radiator on on e of the two bikes wi th water cooling. After lot s of mopping up, the race restarted single file with Ca rr, Huddl esto n. and McDon nell fin ish ing in that order. The junior /Expert main was a real thriller in that th e top five leaders were so smoo th a nd moving so fast lap after lap after lap. you just knew someth ing was going to happen. It didn't and th e fin ish was Kidd, Herndon. Rush , Ru sty Gourley and Phillip Culver. Potter, Duncan, Carr hot at Devil's Bowl HM By Frank Harrison DALLAS. TX. MAY 22 What was billed as the Texas Harley-Davidson Spring Fling and Rolling Thunder Show turned out to be just that as the weather gave promoter Bob Bagwell a break. Taking victories on the black dirt of the Devil's Bowl track were Expert Sammy Potter. junior Ross Duncan and Novice Chris Carr.
