~ Barnett got up, but th e mishap had fo rced him all th e wa y back to last place. Ward a lso had a poor sta rt, a nd was near th e back o f the pa ck. Lechi en passed Kehoe halfwa y through the first lap and im media tely put five seco nds on him. O 'Mara and Myerscough were running third a nd fourth . Barnett was cha rging wildly, and by th e end of only two laps had worked all the way up to fifth place. H e was goin g to th e outside on most of the corners , a nd nabbing two or three places on each attempt. Ward was a lso rapidly moving up. At th e end of three laps, Barnett had made successful moves around Kehoe a nd Myerscough , and had for ced hi s wa y into third. Lechien was runn in g a lo ne out front wi th O'Mara a d istant seco nd . Barnett beg an to rapidly move in on O 'Mara. By lap six, Lechien was 13 seconds a head of O'Mara, while Barnett had moved to within three bikelengths of O 'M ara. Barnett moved closer as they made their way to th e top of o ne of th e hills at th e back of the course. Coming back up the next hill , Barnett made a successful pa ss on O 'Mara. L echien co n ti n u ed to en j oy a lengthy lead, but Barnett was on a rampage. Shaving abou t three seconds off Lechien 's lead on eac h lap, Bar nett mo ved to within two seco nds of him on lap n in e. Rain started to fall , but Barnett co n ti n u ed to close. O 'M ara was still in third. follow ed by Myerscough. Ward had worked his way into fifth. With two lap s left a nd th e rai n co mi ng down harder, Barnett was at th e rear wh eel of Lechien , a nd we nt around as th ey ca me up a hill on th e J back of the co urse. Barnett th en pulled away, comi ng through with his second mot o win ah ead of Lechien, O 'Mara , Myerscough a nd Ward. " After th e crash in th e fir st co rner, I was seei ng sta rs," said Barnett . " I just got up and went ber serk. I just started passing th em in globs to th e outside." H annah was ca ugh t in traffi c a nd fell back to sixt h by th e next corner, behind T eam H onda's Kenn y Keylon a nd Yamah a Support rider Donnie Cantaloupi, At the end of the first circuit. Burnworth was still o ut fro nt with Liles a tight seco nd . H anna h went wi de to get by Keylon and Can taloupi, a nd began to move in o n Bail ey. Running alongside Bailey through the whoops , Hannah ca me ou t of the section in third. Liles p ulled next to Burnworth. th en mot ored past into th e lead . Ha nnah closed on Burnworth and wedged int o seco nd a few corners la ter. Within a lap, Hannah was with in a bik elen gth o f Liles. It took H annah another lap to make th e pass, a fter which he began to easil y lea ve Liles behind. Burn worth a nd Bailey were running th ird a n d fourth. Burnworth came back to battle with Liles, ( but nearly cras hed along the back section and Bail ey moved closer during the incident. H annah conti n ued to stre tch hi s lead on eac h lap ove r L iles, and had bu ilt up a 20-seco nd ga p with two laps left . Burnworth a nd Bail ey were sti ll ru nning third a nd fourth . Hannah ca me aro u nd th e scori ng to wer a t th e chec kered nag a nd th rew his goggles into the cro wd. L iles held o n for seco nd , as Bailey ja m med in side of Burnworth as th ey ca me across th e fin ish lin e. Burnwo rth man aged to remain in third by a wh eell en gth. J im Tarantino worked his way up to fifth on a Honda. With a full-bl own th understo rm underway during th e line-up for the second moto, umbrellas were ra pidly becoming a very popular item. Burnworth pulled his second hol esh ot ahead of Hannah, Thomas Ri ce a nd Cantaloupi. Burnworth was mak ing good time th ro ug h th e slo p , but H annah was closing on th e next lap, followed by Cantaloupi a nd Tarantino. H annah slid around Burn worth in th e muddy opening corner at th e start of th e second lap and quickl y pulled 25 yards ahead. Thunder a nd ligh tningcontinued and th e ra in s inten sified . Tarantino was still floating back in fourth. By th e middle of the moto most of th e co rners were fill ed with wa ter and going to th e outside proved to be th e best line in most cases. Hannah was go ing as wide as possibl e a nd motoring around. The method was working well , a nd he had put Burnworth 30 seco nds behind a fter five laps. T eam Yamah a's Denny Bentley had mo ved up to fourth behind T arantino. H annah was still sp las hing o u t front a nd had 55 seco nds on Burnworth with two laps left. Bentley moved around Tarantino to secu re a di stant third. The rain fin all y ca me to a halt as H annah starte d hi s last lap, a nd th e sky brightened as he sloshed th ro ug h for the win. Burnworth was over a minute behind, followed by Bentley, Keylon a nd Tarantino. Hannah had lapped a ll th e way th rough seventh place. "I didn 't have man y problem s," sa id H annah. " I was shifti ng up a gear, a nd the H onda was hooking up well. I don 't usu ally have problem s with th e o u tdoor mud, but I di slike mud in th e stadi u ms." - co 00 0') .......
