Word wins Boise with "secret weapon" By Marty Gregory BOISE, !D, MAY 14 Frank Word III powered his L ectro-sponsor ed Harle yDavidson to a first-place finish at the 29th running of the Northwest Regional TT Ch ampionship in Boi se. The tw ice-resch ed u led race was run for the first time ever o n a Saturd a y ni ght, a nd th e wi n was Word's first in many tri ps to th e Peaceful Cove track. But Word brou ght a " secret weapon " th is time in th e form of "con su lta n t" Mert on Lawwill. Mert is on a retainer to go a lo ng and see that "everyth in g works OK ." Word 's win didn 't co me eas ily. In th e m ain, Ron Yamamoto (Ya m (YZ490) put pr essure on Woody , aft er co mi ng through a terrific battle with Brad Hurst (Tri) in which Hurst's motor went a way a fter a bo u t a dozen laps. The two-stroke rider from Spokane brought th e crowd to its feet wi th h is slas h ing use-all- of-the-tra ck attempt to ca tch Word. But this was Frank Word's TT race a n d th e co n fiden t look on Men Lawwill 's face durin g th e last few laps told th e wh ol e story. A lot of folks th ought this would be Randy Green 's TT race; after hi s in cred ibl e performance at th e Caldwell shan tra ck last month. But Green was to be denied. He qualified fast, but hi s H onda and he parted co m pan y in a co rne r, lea ving Green holding an arm in pain. Mickey Fay cou ld have been anothe r logi cal pi ck for this year's winner. Fa y m ay ha ve sim p ly been down on pow er for th e co ndi tio ns at Bo ise this n ight. H e went fast, but th e uphill straight with th e wind blowing reall y co nspi res aga ins t sma ller motors. Fay put on a gr eat show with Green before Green crashed out a nd, though a long ways behind Word a nd Yamamoto , h e outrode the rest of the p ack to finish a popular (and moneypaying) third. Hotshoe riders like Fay, Green and Yamamoto ar e winning a lot of fans in Idaho, but hardcore Boise TT-ites come to sec their sentimental favorite, Mr. Lewis Burres. Sonny did wh at he does best ..,... go lik e hell but fail to transfer in his heat, get overanxious on the sta rt in g line for the semi , wi nd up on th e third ro w, get really mad and just ma ke th emain l It wouldn 't be a TT withou t him.
