Team Marlboro Yamaha's Kenny Roberts led the second American 1-23 sweep of a World Championship Ro ad Race Series round th is season when he won the Au strian GP 's 500cc race on Sunday, May 29. Following Roberts across the line in second, his best- ever GP performance, was teammate Eddie Lawson. HB Suzuki' s Randy Mamola completed the sweep, finishing third. Freddie Spencer DNF when hi s T eam Honda NS500 suffered a broken crankshaft. The win bY IRoberts .and the DNF by Spencer tightened the p oints ch ase. Spencer still leads with 68, followed by Roberts with 62, Mamola 39, Katayama 36, arid Lawson 32. Angel Nieto (Gar) won the Austrian GP's 125cc race. The 250cc race was won by Manfred Herweh (Rot), while Rolf Biland and Kurt Waltisperg (Yam) topped the Sidecar class. Klaus-Bernd Kreutz (Hon) tu rn ed in a p air of second pl ace fin ish es LO win the Sunday, May 29, West German 125cc MX GP. Second place went LO Pekka Vekho nen (Ya m) with a 1-5 day, wh ile Corrado Maddii (G il) took third overall with a 4-4 tally. American J im Gibson (Hon ) picked up p oints with 6-10 mOLO performances. Eri c Geboers (Su z) won the second rn oto after crashing out of the first rnoto. G eboers continues to lead th e point standings with a total of 189 p oints, followed by Rinaldi wi th 139, and Gibson with 98. ". Dimiter Rangelov (Suz) won the Sunday, May 29, Bulgarian 250cc MX GP, turning in 2-1 moto finishes. Georges Jobe (Suz) was .. second with a 1-2 day. Defending World Champion Danny laPorte DNF the first moto and finished third in the second moto. Jobe continues to handily lead the point standings with a total of 114 points. Jo Martens is second with 57; Jean-Claude Laquaye is third with 51, and laPorte now has 50. 2 Hakan Carlqvist (Yam) took the overa ll win in th e Swedish 500cc MX GP o n Sunday, May 29. Carlqvist posted 1-2 rn oto finishes . H arry Everts (Suz) was seco nd overall with a 3-1 da y, wh ile Graham No yce (H on) turned in 4-3 moto fin ish es which were good for th ird overall and moved him into th e lead in the point standings over An dr e Malherbe (Hon) who had a 5-7 day. Ameri ca n Gary Semics (H on) fini shed fifth in the second moto. No yce now leads Malherbe by one p oint, 90 to 89. Carlqvist is third in the point standin gs with 79. The French round of the World Championship Observed Trials Series was won by Thierry Michaud (SWM)on Sunday, May 29. Michaud and Californian Bernie Schreiber (SWM) finished the trial with identical scores of 79, but the win went to Michaud on the basis of most cleans. Toni Gorgot (Mon) finished third with a score of 82. Eddy Lejeune (Hon) leads the point standings with 68, followed by Schreiber with 62, and Gorgot with 50. . Motorcycle Wo rld with Larry Huffman is expanding into other markets. The Continental Motosports Club will be sanctioning a two-day event on a new coursa to be constructed at Fort Ord, near Monterey, Calif. The event is scheduled for June 25-26, with a military race running Saturday and a civilian race going on Sunday. The Army will be assisting the promoters by providing fencing along the course, track security, a complete field hospital and a public address system. Montesa's new Cota 242 trials bike features a triangulated, double downtube frame, aluminum swingarm, inverted Betor gas shocks, a reinforced magnesium front hub, full floating rear brake, primary kickstarting and a six speed transmission. The 237.5 engine has a sleeveless alloy cylinder with nickel-silicon bore. The red, white and black bike weighs in at 189 pounds. Brad Lackey, the defending 500cc MX World Champion, who isn 't defending his title in the 500cc GPs this year , will compete in the June 3 CMA Supercross Series round in Toronto, Canada's Exhibition Stadium. This will be Lackey's first ride since clinching his title in August of last year. The fourth and fifth rounds of the AMA/NATC National Observed Trials Championship Series were held over the Memorial Day weekend. In the May 28 round in southern California, New York's Don Sweet (Mon) was the winner, followed by Steve McNeal (Fan) and Scott Head (Mon). We had heard rumors that Hank Scott had signed for the remainder of the year with the Honda dirt track team, but when we contacted team manager Gene Romero, he said, "I can't confirm that yet. We're in the process of negotia- tion at this time. Hank will be with us at Louisville, and I hope he'll be with us for the rest of the season. " Romero also said that the Honda dirt track effort would place its focus strictly on the new RS760, keeping the old NS760 just for beck-up. When the racing goes to the east coast beginning with louisville on June 4, Honda will maintain a race shop in Indianapolis, Ind. National TT winner Brad Hurst put his trusty Triumph in th e winner's circle last weekend, taking the Expert win a t the Cl ackamas, Ore., AMA Regional TT. Dan Bennett bested th e Juniors a nd Chris Carr took top honors in th e Novice Cla ss Watch for complete coverage next week in eN's " Nort h ern Dateline." Yamaha motocrosser Rick Johnson sat out the Mt. Morris, Pa., Wrangler Super Series race due to the hip injury he sustained in the · St. Louis round. Yamaha race team manager Ken Clark reports that Johnson's hip is now back in its socket, but tests are still being done to determine if any blood vessels were damaged in the fall. Although more tests will be run later in the week, Clark is hopeful that Johnson will be back on a bike in six to eight weeks. The group Vintage Racers of O ld Motorcycles, more sim p ly known as VROOM, invites owners and supporters of vin tage and classic motorcycles to the Champion Spark Plug 200 at Laguna Seca on July 16-17. The oldies-but-goodies will be featured in a two-day display and will have a ride around the track. But they'll be putting on a motocross at the Flying LD Ranch near St. George, Utah. Located just east of Zion National Park, the LD course is up in the pretty scenery - egads, even trees - and is great just for camping, although racers will have to jet for the 6000-foot altitude.
