Stearns still hot in D-37 HS By Shirley Upp LUCE R NE VALLEY, CA , MAY 22 Chu ck Stearns aboa rd his Montclair 490 Yamaha once again took the overall win with only seco n ds to spare, this time 38 in th e Prairie Dogs M.e. "Dog-gonit " Hare Scrambles. It was 250cc rider Tim Sinclair, another Montclair rider, who made h is bid for th e lead but with two flat tires wa s unable to overtak e Stearns . Two mi les past th e bomb it was Husky rider Dan Smith in th e lead and Ed Pierce Jr. was leading th e 250cc class and running third overall. Dan Ash craft, who was having problem s with swollen eyes from allergies, came by at fourth . Sinclair ran fifth followed by first C bike rider Du ane Summers. Out in front in th e No vice race it wa s Kirk He intz. Joe Jesseph came by at second. After a chain of bad lu ck that would discourage many riders, Ron Patrick passed th e bomb running third. Harold Allen, 250cc rider, came by at fourth . First Beginner to co me by was Gary Dubin. After the first time around the 38m ile course it was Stearns coming into the p its in the lead . Smith had seized early in the race and Ashcraft also had problems to put him out of the rac e. Fighting for second place it was Sinclair and Pierce on their 250s, seconds apart. Pierce m issed home check and had to turn around and take precious time in making sure he got his tank card marked. Summers had a super ride going on his C bike and came through at fourth overall. Chris Crandall was running fifth. Ron Shuler was on the throttle in h is first ride as an Expert and up with the front runners at sixth. Leading the 250cc Senior class Gary Charters had moved up to eighth and was on his way to his eighth-straight win on his hot Suzuki. Leading in the 250cc Amateur class was Scott Stearns, while another tough race was going on in . the 250cc Vet class. Jeff Vaughn had the lead but no t far back w~ Wes An de rson Jr. Lo ri Farmer had a nice lead in th e Women 's class.
