T ire choice was cr itica l to all sideca r teams for the race since th e track was wet. Various co m bina tio ns o f ribbed a n d slick tires were fo und on most rigs. In additio n, th ere had been litt le practice a nd no qua lifying heat had been ru n. This compou nded the ap prehension of learn ing a new track under racing conditions. The H op p / Alston Ka.w asa ki took the lead on th e o pe n ing la p wi th Lin d/Hart, on th eir Yam aha un it in second, and th e Essaff/Crueger Kawasaki in th ird . T he Yamaha pow ered rig of Ian Fijlery and Bruce Ceelen followed in fourth with Paul Knoll and Rolla nd Readrnann, in a Kawasaki chair, rou ndi ng out th e top five. Essaff/ Crueger quickly dropped th e Hopp/ Alston effo rt to seco n d an d was n ever headed in th e rest of th e 12 lap, 28.8 m ile event. J oh n and Ar thur Da iley, racing a Suzuki-powered sideca r, fo und th e wet track co n ditions a bit o f a p roblem and went off the track. They eventually worked back to fifth.
