Though this erroneous statem ent is often made by journalists outside th e co u ntry , Alan (a n d Cycl e News) should know better. Without taking away anything due Harley-Davidson, it is not accurate to minimize or omit th e very substantial production facilities of Kawa saki (an d one of its competitors). Kawasaki has manufactured 400cc to IOOOcc motorcycles in its Lincoln, Neb., plant . since 1975 and, without revealing actual confidential production statistics, the num ber of units manufactured there has been substantial and will increase significant ly in 1983-84. Further. the U.S. Intern ational Trade Commission has, on rwoseparat e occasions. seen fit to co nsider Kawasaki's Nebraska plant as part of the legitimate production facilities of the United States motorcycle industry. In closing, while we tak e no offense at this peice of misinforma tion, we would lik e to correct th e record. ROBERT M. MOFFIT Director, Marketing Research Kaw asaki Motors Co rp. , USA Santa Ana, CA While we agree that Kawasak i's Neb raska plant and Honda 's Oh io plant are part of th e U.S. motorcycle industry, w e see nothing inaccu rate about characterizing Harley-Davidson as th e sole surviving volume motorcycle manufacturer in North America. Assembling motorcycles is just one step in manufacturing them . . .Editor . UEA thanks riders On behalf of the U nited Enduro Association, I wa nt to thank a ll o f you who part icipated in the 1983 Not So Tuff-E-Nuff Enduro. We had a lo t of fu n doing it and hop e that you enjoyed it as well. It was nice to see a large turnout at a District event. We had almost 350 entries and nearly everyone finished. No one zeroed either loop, although, with the exception of our two special tests a t 30 mph, the loop speeds were either 18 or 24 mph. Every ch eck caught some riders either lat e or early. With II field ch ecks, including six tie-breakers. we tried to keep everyone guessing as to what would co me up n ex t. The Not So Tuff-E-Nuff was designed to challenge each perso n 's ri ding and timekeeping skills without a " kille r" co u rse and give every o ne an enjoyable rid e. Hope to see yo u next yea r. CHARLES BROWN Referee, United Enduro Associ ation Wh ittier, CA Call him handsome Oops. Thea Gavin 's point is no t well taken , not by me at least. I' m willing to bet that not one o f th e 2 1 women racers I referred to as lovely ladies were offended, so wh y is Ms. Gavin? The reason I mentioned their loo ks at a ll is the misconception many people have, that for a woman to race a motorcycle she must be built like a R ussia n weightlifer. Also (a n d I'm sorry if this upsets Th ea), the starting line was a lot more pl easant to look at than when the men line up. I know there's a movement around that would hav e m en a n d women using the sam e bathroom so we would be truly equa l, but I'm too shy . However, if yo u ever call me handsome, I promise not to get mad. DERTJERKE Corona, CA Cherry Creek hare 'n' hound '83 You will want to attend the 23rd annual Cherry Creek hare ' n ' hound race on Sunday, May 29. I made it th ere last year and talked to ri ders from mos t of the weste rn states, and everyone agreed that this is a m ust race for the casual rider a nd serious racer as well . T he Sugarloafers offer a three-loop race thai includes mountains, sa nd and desert to lest yo u r skills and . sat isfy your desires. To ro u n d ou t your ridin g experience , this race is worthy of gath ering up two, three or four of your friends to share expenses a n d driving time. You will be glad yo u did. To say th e least , the first half of die Wrangler Super Series National Mot ocros s tour has been en gligh ten ing. When I left m y position a t Cycle ' N ews / East a nd acce p ted a job at ProS ports Consultants, I kn ew little, o f what was expect ed o f me in m y new ca pacity as media relations ag ent for th e Super Seri es. .; .J Now. I've defined th e job , gotten .. into th e swin g of things, and learned one very important point: I have more friends in this business th an I ever imagined . J Yes, I am seeing results. and slowl y but surely motocross is reaching publi city on a national level. USA Today, Associated Press, Sports Ill ustrat ed an d Mot or Racing Network are a few of th e mainstream medi a that are . n ow starting to accep t motocross as a legitimat e major sport. I'd be fooli sh to think I've made th is kind of progress all a lo ne. l ow e thanks to many folks, people who have made an extra effort to support m y efforts. Thanks to th e riders, the guys who have answered one basic question a fter a no th er on media da ys around the nation; you know who you are. Thanks to th e a n n ou nce rs, those professionals wh o en dlessly talk about th e Wrangler Super Series and explain its purpose to th e specta tors. Thanks to th e team managers and m echan ics, those persons who get little o r no recognition , yet are the central driving force behind the sport 's su ccess. Thanks to the promoters, who have given the Wrangler crew and myself generous su p port at each and every even t. All of the folks at Wrangler would a lso li ke to extend their than ks. Di-J recto r of Special Events David Alle n, r Wrangler Super Series Manager Kath y Hoy. form er manager Bob J an elle (w ho h a s now moved back into Wrangler's NASCA R program), assistant manager Avet Anderson and the rest of the Wrangler team greatly appreciate everyone's support. As we move into the second half of th e season , I'm exp ect in g that even better things will generated by everyone involved. It looks like 1983 will be a great year for us all.
