In a fit o f a nger both g ot underw ay but th e competi tio n was long gone . Law son had a poor first mo to score but thi s tim e he was a t th e righ t pl ace a t the right time and took over th e top SP0 l. Iron icall y, th e top riders in thi s moto took mediocre scores in the open ing race . Beh ind Lawson ca me Kevin Brown (ninth in the fir st race) and Sk ip Cristy worse wit h a n l l th pl ace. In fourth J abloski was still in a prim e position and hi s 2-4 tally earned him first pla ce over Bell , Jansen . Brown and O verby. When ever a four-stroke en ters th e line-up it is usuall y a co mpetit ive threa t and Mike Buff's thundering _ Honda XR200 was just th at. Racing against 250cc two-stro kes, Buff too k off with th e lead in th e first moto o f Juni or division o ne racing . The twostroke riders cou ld n ' t g ive Buff a to ug h time a nd the race was all his. Don Shaw on a Suzuki' was in seco nd at the beginning, faded back to fourth, th en moved up to third behind J oe Finzel (H on ). Wh en th e checkered flag was waving it was Buff with th e win a nd Finzel second. Second moto acti on saw Buff leading the race but thi s time he was not a dominant force. Finzel proved equally as com pe titive, especia lly wh en Buff overshot a co rner. As th ey h eaded down th e stra ig h t towards th e fini sh line sectio n . th e two were even but it was Buff shooting into the berm a t th e next turn. On the final lap they held th eir throt tles wide o pe n as th ey dragged to th e fini sh lin e. a nd the officia ls gave th e close win to to Buff. Two firsts made it a perfect night of racing for Buff. who edged out Fin• zel. Jeff Sm ith and Sha w.
