John Martin (C-A) edged out M ike Melton by a scant two seconds at the tie-breaker check to take the overall win in the May 8 Redneck National Enduro in Saline, Louisiana . Both riders lost 13 po ints. Kevin Hines (Hus), Dave Bertram ( H u s) and Terry Sea les (Hus) rounded out the top five. Seales took the High Point A award. Three-time World Champion Kenny Robert s (Yam) made it four straight 500cc GP road race wins by American Riders in 1983 when he won the German GP at Hocken h eim on Sunday, May 8. Takazumi Katayami (Hon) finished second with former World Champion Marco Lucchinelli (Hon) third. Fast qualifier Freddie Spencer (Hon) dropped to fourth when a hole deve loped in one of his bike's expansion cha mbers. The race ' was run in heavy rain and shortened to 15 laps from the scheduled 19. Americans Ran dy Mamola (Suz) and Eddie Lawson (Yam) finished eigh th and ninth, respectively. The 500cc G P point standings after four ro unds are as follows: Spencer 53, Roberts 35, and Lucch ine lli 25. The next round takes p lace in Spa in on May 29. The German GP's 260cc race was won by carlos Lavado (Yam). Angel Nieto (Gar) scored yet another GP win in the 126cc race, and Stefan Doerflinger (Kra) won the 60cc event. Following the cancelation of the May 1 Italian 260cc MX GP due to snow, the Dutch GP took place at Merkelo, Holland, on Sunday, May 8 , and it was Georges Jobe (Suz) turning in a perfect 1-1 day for top points. Second overall with 32 moto pe.rformances was Jo Martens (Yam ), while defending World Champion Danny laPorte (Yam) took third with a 2-4 tally. Although the Shadow is water-cooled, the RS is completely air-cooled, with an external oil tank residing in front of and underneath the engine. About the machine, rider Hank Scott, who had ridden it in testing, said, "It's got more torque, just like a Harley. Before it's over, it'll w in races. It 's a built racing motor, just like.the XR ." Injured motocrosser Danny " Magoo " Chandler was spectating at the May 7 Ascot half mile. In the Honda pits lookin g at the new RS750 V-twin, Magoo 's first comment was, "It needs more suspension travel." Jay Springsteen's Ascot win, in , addition to being his 34th Grand National victory, was his 16th half mile National win. Bart Markel is the all-time leader in that category with 18. Hank Scott was at Ascot half mile National wearing the red, white and bl ue leathers of Team Honda. The l4·time National winner has been hired to do develo p ment work on the new RS750 and will ride the Springfield and San J o se miles for the Japanese firm. At Ascot Scott was aboard o ne ·of the old NS750s and didn't fare too well. failing to make the Nationals. "I had handling problems," he explai ned. "I was trying every line there was out there and we tried to figure out things in the pits, but we couldn't make it any better." The annual Mammoth Mountain Motocross has been postponed from June 17-19 to Sept. 9 -11 because excessive snow still blocks the road to the track. Entries have also been set back, w ith the official entry form appearing in Cyc'e News the first week of August. "We still have 192 inches of snow on the mountain," said a Mammoth ski area employee, " We'll be skiing through 17th of July." Yamaha Support rider Donnie Cantaloupi will be sidelined for a few weeks following injuries sustained at the Kansas City Supercross. His chin was severly cut, requ iring n umerous stitches inside and out. and an a n kle was also damaged. Cantaloupi landed on top of Jeff Hicks after they la unch ed from the top of a hill. Hicks was no t hun, but Cantaloupi's chin struck his handlebars. Cantaloupi will sit out the May 14 Washington, D.C., Supercross;although he may be there to spectate. He plans to make the May 22 SI. Mother Nature hasn 't been too kind to dirt t rack riders and enthu- siasts anywhere in the country recently, but two races we know won 't get rained out will be the May 20-21 AMA Central Regional Championship Dirt Track Series short track in Texas. The May 20 event takes 'p lace in Fort Worth's Tarrant County Convention Center at 8 p.m. The following night at the same t ime, the action takes place at Dallas' Reunion Arena. " W e'v e added a special $1500 rider point fund for these two evenu, " said former AMA Grand National Champion Mike Kidd, who is sponsoring the evenU. "The Expert, Junior and Novice riders who score the most points, using the Camel Pro Series points system, w ill each receive $500. For a Novice rider , that 's a hefty payday. " IN MEMORIAM: NMRA Manufacturer rep and so uthern Ca lifornia motocross promoter Steve Crosby, 25, was killed May 5 in a freak tractor accident while preparing the O ra ng e County International Raceway mo tocross track for a night event. Crosby, who penned many drag race and local motocross stories for Cycle News, was also a popular announcer and his presence at race tracks -across the country will be sorely missed. He
