Dillon stumps to Mattawa win By Steve Hammer MATTAWA, WA, AP R. 10 Ron Dill on p ushed h is Yamaha Support YZ490K into first overall in the 14th annual Stumpjump er's Ma tta wa 100. T he H iPo int/Hallman -sponsored rider had a rela tiv ely trouble-free ride in what turned o u t 10 be perhaps the to ughest Mattawa race 10 date - ou t of 803 start ers, only 307 finished. Sunday morn ing greeted th e ra cers without th e usual gust y Mattawa win ds ; it was cool a nd dry, and th e a tmosp h ere q u ickly, changed .from o ne of pl a y to o ne o f serious racing. At 9:30 a.m. , a sea of bodies gathered for th e ri ders' meeting, and a fter th e usual forma lities, everyone grabbed their bi ke a nd h eaded for th e start. It was spooky! Ov er 800 riders li ned u p in ch est-high sagebrush, with zero trai ls running th ro ugh it. After everyone shut down a nd got prepared. th e smokebo m b was lit. Then the ban n er dropped . and h undreds of screaming bikes headed fo r the bomb. Ther e were IOns o f m in or crashes; the hOI se t-up was to bo u nce a lo ng in second gear, a nd avoid th e bi ggest bus hes , and other downed riders. At the bomb. top runners incl u ded Ro b ReIa ford (H o n XR 350), Mike Kell y (125 H o n ). R ick McUn e (430 Hus). a nd Ron Dil lon (490 Yam ). At th e bottom of th e sa n d hi ll Dil lo n was leading , wi th Rela ford rig ht o n hi s fender. As they h it th e sa nd dunes, Rela ford zipped past , bu t as th e two cl imbed back up th e mountain o n a steep, rocky road. Dillon too k th e lea d back . Also runnin g h igh at th is p oin t were Reed Bri ght (495 KTM ), Bob Na ncolas (250 H on ) a nd Dan Muller (495 KT M). Pre-ra ce favori te R itch Bin kley (465 Yam ) was a lso m o ving up a fter a poor sta rt. As the troops roared into the pits a t th e en d o f lap one, th e orde r rema in ed Dillon a n d Rela ford. The usual Ma tta wa troubles str uck just abo u t everyo ne else. as Nancolas ran o u t o f gas , Bright p ick ed up a flat , and Muller an d Binkley dropped back wi th clutch tro u ble. As th e second la p progressed . a nd severa l contenders dropped back with trouble, othe rs moved up into th e top 10. T OlIl Moen , Brian Purfeerst, Mel Thompson, a n d Ron Lem on, a ll zipped into top positions o n th e seco n d la p . With a killer downhill , and a h orro r o f a n uphill, a lo n g with various whoops and rocks. th ere were hun dreds of riders who didn 't ride the final la p . Dillon h eld the lead into th e fin ish ch u te. with Relafo rd second . and Tom Moen th ird. An Idah o rider. Dillon became th e firs t o u t-o f-sta te win ner in th e l -l-year history o f th e race. T he first 250cc co mpetitor was Mel T hom pso n in fifth ove ra ll. a nd Mik e Kell y, another Ida ho rider . p us he d h is 125 H onda into a su pe r 12th ove ra ll, first l25cc.
