Larson moved into the number one position on the same lap, with Bell also getting around Bailey. Bell slid by Larson on the next lap with Bailey going back into second as Larson faded. Martin had, by this time, secured third with Myerscough fourth. Bell ' was looking very strong and had built a seven second stronghold between himself a nd Bailey by the middle of the event. Bell held out u nti l the finish with Bailey, Martin and Myerscough keeping their posi] tions. Hannah, Howerton and King were nestled amongst many three digit numbers as the last chance q u alifier lin ed up. Hannah pulled o u t to an immediate lead over Howerton, with King moving into third a few la ps later. Hannah went on to win with Howerton nabbing second and the only other transfer spot to the final. l ,I Final Barnett bombed his way into th~ opening sweeper ahead of Glover and Burnworth. Glover hung close then snatched the lead from Barnett halfway through the first la p. Barnett bounced back, cutting back out front . before the next circuit. Bell and Johnson had moved ahead of Burnworth. Barnett's Suzuki and G lover's Yam aha stuck together for another three laps, when Glover began to fall back. Bell was now knocking on Glover's door with Johnson also within strik"i ng distance. Hannah was no w in fift h behind Johnson. On th e next lap, Johnson went through the ba n n ers after a whooped straigh t and lost a full lap before get ] ting back underway. Bell had moved to within four seconds of Barnett, with Glover, Hannah and Lechien spread around the track. I Bell was in a hol din g pattern behind Barnett and was slowly picking up a few feet with each succeeding lap . As Barnett was busy contending with some lapped tra ffic, Bell a ttempted to close the gap. The same traffic prevented Bell from going around, so as the final lap started, Barnett was still in a most enviable position. Bell conti nued to pressure Barn ett , but Barnett he ld true to the finish: Glover and Hannah also stayed with the positions they had held for the last 10 la ps of the 20 lap event. Ward fin ished a distant fifth . " I knew Bell was entertaining the thought of passing me," said Barnett. "I was holding a good line, and was making few mistakes. Bell wou ld have had a tough time getting around:' "I simply couldn't make up the difference on Barnett," said Bell. "The time I spent moving through some traffic didn't leave me with enough time to make a charge around him in the end:' 8 I (Above) DIIVid Bailey (11), the opening night's second placer, leads Rick Johnson . (Below ) Mike Bell has returned fro m inju ries to be a thre at on the 250s. His last t h ree Supercross rides have ne tted a w in , a second and a fourth . tory bike. Michigan 's Dan Wallace mov ed by Surwall and McKenna to nail second behind Pits. Wallace then shot around Pitts to secure the lead and the win , with Surwall and Pitts following. The last quarter-final of the weekend belonged to Canadian Doug Hoover. Hoover led th ro ugh ou t' the race to score th e victory ahead of fellow Canadian Serge Gregoire. As the top two finishers, the pair transferred to the semi-finals. Semi-finals lap and Bell survived for the win, ahead of Bailey and Myerscough. 10 Howerton's factory Kawasaki was the first splash of color into the opening sweeper in the last heat, with Michigan's Alan King and Donnie Cantaloupi residing on his fender. King forged his works Suzuki ahead of Howenon before the next comer, with Cantaloupi holding third and Martin fourth. King held on throughout Howerton's attack to get the win in front of h is hometown crowd. Quarter-finals Honda-mounted Aaron Pitts led the way into the first quarter-final, besting Eric McKenna, and Jeff Surwall's white Yamaha of Canada Iac- Glover made good his bid for the ho leshot in the first of two semi-final events, with Ward and Barnett shadowing. Barnett made a quick move around Ward on the following lap and was closing on G lover. As Glover and Barnett approached ' a jump, the power of the works Suzuki put Barnett to the top first. Gl over was knocked to second with Ward quickly closing. Ward took an outside line, captured the second spot, and began moving closer to leader Barnett. As the end o f the final la p approached.jward made an effort to snare the.lead , but a traffic jam let Barnett win his second event of the day. Glover, Johnson and Burnwort h fill ed the next three positions. Hannah , looking even more weary, went off the course near the end after a bad start. Hannah fin ished out of the top eight, so was forced to ride the last chance q uali fier to be assured of a start in the final. Results SATURDAV 1. Bob Hannah (Hon ); 2. Dav id Bailey (Hon); 3.
