Hannah was still suffering from a two -week battle with an intestinal flu , but so me ho w managed to muster th e strength needed to win. Barnett rocketed into th e lead as Sunda y' s fin al began, thwartin g efforts by Broc Glover and Mike Bell throughout th e co ntest to grab th e lead, a nd took th e lead in the series . The to tal s a fter both da ys of racin g show Barnett wi th 402, 12 po in ts ahead of Hannah. Th e J ohn Savi tski -desi gned track featured a starting area not un lik e a n outdoor Nation al, with a banked sweep er a t th e en d of a h igh speed pad. The extreme width o f the co urse a ll o wed pa ssing a lmost everyw here. Most o f th e whoop sectio ns were of th e two- o r three-jump va riety, a ll formed from a san d and clay mixture. The Detroit a rea m ay be in a severe depression, but nevertheless, 32,001 fans showed up on Saturday and 30, 101 watched on Sunday. ....... ....... Saturday Heats Kawasaki's Jeff Ward was o ut front as th e first heat was released onto the track , with Yamaha Support rider Warren Reid and Barnett a close 2-3. Barn ett made his way around Reid ~ on th e first lap , but was unable to make any ground on Ward. Reid and Yamaha's Ro n Lechien battled for third the remainder of the race, with Ward taking the win by four seco nds over Barn ett. Lechien finally got around Reid at th e end to get third . Broc Glover, Hannah and Team Kawasaki 's Kent Howerton won the race to the banked comer in th e second heal. Glover and Hannah swapped th e lead several times, but Han nah went out front as the one la p sign was given a nd held off G lover's charge. Howerton was a d ista nt th ird, with Tamm Racing's Mike Shoemaker fourth . Mark Barnett has scrambled up in the standings after early season bike woes to lead in Wrangler series points. Bob Hannah and Mark Barn ett were tied for the poin ts lead going into the event, with Barnett getting th e nod following a flawl ess performance on Sunday. A very sick Hannah turned in an P h il Larson grabbed th e holesh o t in th e third hea t aboard h is factory H onda , wi th Yamaha's Mike Bell a n d Ri ck J oh nson tight to th e rear. Bell took over by the second co mer, but overs hot a ban ked co mer a t th e end of a deeply whooped section. Johnson moved into th e lead a few corners later, wi th Ba i ley going around Larson. Johnson went down as he came o£f a jump, and Bail ey went o ut front, T he crash didn 't slow Johnson much , as he immediatel y remounted and began to close o n Ba iley . Johnson caught Ba il ey in a sweeper on th e final lap and went around for th e win. Larson and Steve Martin followed in third and fourth . The final heat wa s the J o h n n y O'Mara show all th e way , as he gunned into the first comer ahead of Suzuki's Scott Burnworth and held his ground forth e entire event. Kawa saki's Bill y Liles finished 10 seconds behirid Team Honda's O'Mara wi th Brian Myerscough third. Quarter -f inal s Yamaha-mounted Rodney Smi th was out front as the first of IWO quarter-finals gOI rolling, follow ed by Dan Wa lla ce and Mickey Kessler. Wa llace went into the lead on th e firs t la p a nd rem a in ed th ere for th e wi n . Smith a nd Ca nadian Terry H ofoss foll owed . Mark Garrison shot o u t fro nt in the seco nd quarter-fina l wi th Rob H od gso n in tow . Kris Bigelow made h is wa y through the pack and went into the lead on la p four. After a close battle wi th Ross Pederson, Bigelow took the win.
