They fini sh ed with th e quickest Jun ior time so far thi s season , but th e next o ne was quicker . Jim Taves on another Ca n-Am earned himself th e p ol e positi on by leadin g th e seco nd hea t start to fini sh i n th e qui ck est tim e. T r i u m p h mou nted Mike Kirby had go tte n a grea t sta rt , but th en sta rted to poop out goi ng through th e so u th tum. He go t goi ng again a nd slid into fifth spot o n the la st lap. U p front it was Taves, a go od gap, th en a ll grou ped together, Mearl Barnett, Dan Mull in s an d La rry Ea rh art. Ross Klatt flat got with it in th e sem i a nd led it from la p one o n, with Larry Earha rt tucked a way safe ly in seco nd. Jimmy Rosa , Don Robert s and Mik e Kirb y so rte d o u t th ird between the m with Kirby even tua lly ta king it for keep s. Roberts dropped o u t a n d J oe Kni ght, wh o comes to Ascot with a Suzuki morocrosser , ended fifth and first alternate. The main got a way o n a restart with three shoes o n lin e three, San Roman , Carroll a nd Taves, an un popular o fficia l decision as it shou ld have been a n even restart; th e starter h ad erred instead o f the rid ers. Land, Klatt and Kirby ca me out of tum two three a breast, but Land steadily pulled a way with a very good ride, loo king like the rabbi t wi th a ll th e greyhounds chasing him. San Roman appeared through th e pack quite quick ly, taking on Klatt a nd Kirb y, followed by Taves and Carroll, who h adn 't been quite so successfu l in getting through traffic. For several laps th ey gave the scant crowd some real good racing, but Klatt wasn't about to get ca u gh t by San Roman af ter he'd successfu lly defen ded h is seco nd spot from Mike Kirby. T here were on ly enough Novices o n hand for two h eat s. In the m ain Bob Beer was the leader; Mike Arthu r and Randy Bird spe nt man y laps disputi ng second pl ace back a n d forth between the m . Aga in, right a t the en d th in gs h ap pe ned. Art h ur fin all y passed Bird for the las t time and the n Rand y lost th e th ird spot to Greg Nelson, while Dan McDonnell , wh o had fifth sew n u p , crossed th e fi nish lin e last on a sour engine.
