With three tracks each hosting two races. the action started at Oulton Park on Saturday, April 30. and it was Californian Randy Mamola (Suz) winning both events. Haslam was second in each race. w ith Kenny Roberts (Ya m ) taking third both t imes out. Sunday saw the action shift to Snetterton where Haslam, Roberts. a nd England's Roger Ma rshall (Ho n ) fin ished 12-3 in both ra ce s. The final two races were held on Monday at Brands-Hatch and Haslam again won both races. Marshall. Mamola. Eddie Lawson (Ya m ) a nd Barry Sheene (Suz ) fi n ished 2-3-4-5 behind Haslam in the first race. while Britisher Keith Huewen (Suz). Mamola. Roberts and Lawson fo llowed Haslam across the line in the second race. Ta les of woe sur' ro u nded the other American team members as Mike Baldwin (Hon ) crashed on the meeting's first day and suffered broken toes. David Aldana (Suz) was aboard what was described as a "worn out" RG500. and Wes Cooley crashed his Kawasaki on two occasions. The final score was England 245. America 198. Team Honda 's Johnny O 'Mara sustained injuries in a crash in the Sat urday final at the Pontiac Supercros s. He suffered a fractured collarbone and o ther injuries. O'Mara's bike popped out or gea r wh ile he was a ttem p ting to mak e a double jump. He didn 't clea r both ofthe jumps du e to the lack or speed , then went down. There is no word as yet as to how long he will be o ut. Husqvarna has int rod uc e d its first 175cc models since 1976. The 175 XC (a bove) is well suited for western desert events and ha re scrambles work. while the 175 WR has a low e r seat height and less wheel travel for enduros. The " Ho nda Plague. " whic h started with Bob Hannah contracting a type of intestinal flue , has spread throughout the Honda camp. Hannah and his mechanic Brian Lunn is spent four days in Florida after the Gatorback National w ithout leaving their motel rooms. Team Manager Dave Arnold was unable to make the Pontiac Supercross at all . after getting the flu. a long with a 103° temperature. O'Mara was a lso showing signs of the illness. I want to make sure we have input from all those inv ol ve d before rendering the decision." Suzuki 's EricGeboers won both motos en route to victory in the Iifth round of the I 25cc Wor ld Motocross Championship, held May I in Fran ce. American Jim Gibson turned in a 3-2 tally to place second overall on his works Yamaha. The 250cc Wor ld MX round scheduled [or the same da y in Ital y, was reportedl y rained ou t. The British road race team. led by Ron Haslam (Hon ). trou nc e d t he Am erican team in the Anglo-Amer- Husqvarna's Larry Roeseler was the overall winner or the Spur, Texas, One-Day ISDE Qualifier, taking the 500cc Intent cla ss over fellow Husky rider Ch ip Howell. Fritz Kadlec pushed hi s water-cooled KX250 around to the second overall score and took top honors in the 250cc Intent class, followed by H usky rid ers Kevin Brown and Kevin Hines. Ch uck Miller led a Honda sweep of the O ver 500cc Four-Stroke Intent class , and Washington's Dan Dillon bested the 125cc Intent ranks on a KTM. Of note was Honda teamster Tom Kelly's fourth in the 250cc Intent (sixth overall ) on an XR200 R fourstro ke. Also of note in Texas was Kad lec's - . unbel ievably,good fortune . With only a few miles to go on t he trail, Kad lec lost his countershaft sprocket. Kicking the dusty ground along the trail he'd just ridden, he was luc ky enough to find the piece. For the remain ing 12 miles or so, Kadlec rode holding the sprocket on with his boot. grinding a hole in it in the process. Washington's Ken Shandrow repeated hi s Masters class win in the Sierra Old Timers' Hangrown Hangover. the Iirst or seven Old T imers National s to be run th is year. J ack Coulombe or the host club won the Expert class in the two-day event held April 30-May I. Dunlop has announced a cash and product award program for comj petitors in the American Federation of Motorcyclists' Championship Road Racing Series. A series championship in 750Cc Production Box Stock or the 600cc Production Box Stock classes is worth $1 000 providing the rider was Dunlop-shod. In addition, a set of Sport Elite tires will be given to the w inner of each championship points-paying series event in t he above classes. Riders should contact the AFM for additional info on meeting contingency qualifica tions. Vance "will use Accel pro; ducts on his competition machines, and will assist Accel engineers in developing a full line of performance ig niti o n parts and related accessories for popular Japanese motorcycles."
