In the first ra ce o f th e da y, 250cc Pro rid er Bryan Mal oney (Hon ) led a ll th e wa y to th e checkered £la g o nce he overt ook leader Woody Carl son (Yam) on th e Ca rls bad freewa y. Bustin' th e dirt as hard as h e co u ld to move seco nd pl ace Carlson for third wa s Val Tamietti (Ma i). Maloney h ad to try just a little harder in th e secon d m oto. Sco tt Slayton (Yam) had th e holesh ot but was soon passed by David Hopwood (H on ) in seco nd, with Maloney in third. Next two go-aro u nds saw Mal oney a nd T amiett i battling for second, bu t by th e fourth lap , Mal on ey had said go od bye to Tam iett i. On th e fifth lap, Mal on ey slipped by Hopwood on th e downh ill side o f th e freeway. No o ne co u ld co me close to catch ing him as h e cro ssed th e finish for first aga in. T amietti and Hopwood were two turns beh ind fo r seco nd an d third respecti vely, and Carlson ro lled in fourth. The seco nd wid e-m argin win of th e day was by Fallbrook's Steve Andre o n a Yamaha in th e 125cc Jun ior class. In th e fir st moto , h e was seco nd for three-fourths of a lap beh ind Greg Boyce (Suz ) with Eric Di ck erh off (H on) in th ird. Once Andre powered by Bo yce, wh o fini shed th ird, h e di sappeared 10 a lonely first p lace. In th e second rnoto , Andre led th e w ho le wa y to first, £l ying fast and h igh over j u m ps. Every lap h e got " spacier," addin g lo ts of it between h im a n d an yo ne who had once seen him at the sta rt ing line. Com in g in for two seco n d pl ace spots was John Flehler (Kaw), whil e Eric Dickerhoff was third overall . It was no co ntesto ei ther in th e 500cc Pro event of the da y as David Gerig (H us ) eas ily w ~m hi s class . George Spearing was th e seco nd placer in m oto one, while Buzz Moell er shone in seco nd in m oto two . Expert Danny Dr ew took th e holeshot in moto one of hi s class a nd a n ext to th e last pl a ce start in moto two, but nev erth eless, he won eith er wa y. Cal Brownin g took second in moto one and Bob Crandall did it for moto two . Da vis went down o n the start, but did some fast moving a nd catching up to en d up with seco nd p lace. . Novice Oren Spahn blasted into th e leadfor one lap. H e was p assed by Fred Maynard, who took over and won moto o ne. Spahn hung in th ere for second. In moto two Dick Doyle led all the other Novices to th e fir st turn , but Spa h n slipped by him, taki ng the lead and th e wi n. Maynard was th ere for seco nd p lace honors. Results MASTERS: 1.
