By the time the Ex hibi tion class had co ncl uded its firs t set, th e other classes, save the 37 1-500cc Expert class, had sum med up their runs. Suz u ki a nd H onda eac h wo n a class in th e hands of Marvy Butterfield (Suz) a nd Jeff Din sdale. Maico and - Yamaha split up the remai n ing classes wi th Yam a h a ta king the lions share. In a ll, four YZs and a H ond a 480 went over, but all th e othe rs wen t o u t of bo u n ds a t o ne poi nt. Second round runs in the exh ibitio n cla ss bega n to heat u p as James Brindos put h is H arl ey-Davidson 15DO over. T ha t run seem ed to ligh t every one u p . Ten runs la ter Da ve Morris went over o n a H onda 480, bu t was ru led o u t of bounds. Onl y o ne run lat er , Steve Sti th took hi s Palmdal e Harley- Davi dso n 11 00 Spo rts ter o ver. H e had had cl u tch problem s o n h is fir st run . C urtis Mitche ll, o n a n RM 465 using last yea rs 250cc class win ne rs ' rea r paddle and swingarm, went ove r th e rock led ge a t 1100 feet an d kept going , but he lo oped ou t before th e top for seven th in th e Exhibit ion class. Six runs la ter , Brian H ooker 's 11 00 Yamaha went ove r th e led ge a nd no farth er. Chuck Fo rd went u p 900 feet in the ex h i bi tion cl a ss la st yea r o n an RM 250! This year he returned wi th the sa me bike. No t sa tisfied with a minor h orsepo wer in crease, h e shoehorned a three cy linde r Suzuki 750 wat erpum per engi ne into th e 250 fra me. In the sta rt ing area h e guara n teed a run over th e to p. H e hit th e ledge a nd took a leap in to th e a ir, but h it a rock wh en landin g that nearly threw him over th e bars. H e landed back on th e seat a nd gassed it , onl y to hav e hi s tethered ki ll switch pull out because he didn 't have his left hand o n th e bars yet.
