" Len Leball Patterson, NJ By Terry Rezek ORANGE, CA , APR. 17 The Saddleback track was in good shape for the California Racing Club's Coors G P after a ll the rain, bu t the water truck was st ill needed a s th e brisk breeze rapidlv dried th e track. Where the truck couldn 't rea ch, the wind did and blew away most of the dust. Dave Fernandez blew away the rest of th e O pe n Intermediates, Novice and Beg inners in a flag-to-flag romp. Corpe went down a nd left La Duca in co ntro l of third overall and second Novice. From our vantage a t th e midd le of the track, it looked as if Jon Ba rrick got th e holeshot o n th e rest of the 0-200 competitors, but was passed o n th e rough u p h ill by D ua n e E lliott. Wh en th ey ca me around, Intermedi ate Elliott wa s leadi ng a nd Ba rr ick h ad bee n joined by fellow No vice Ma r k Maxwell. T immy Da le fi lled o u t th e top four in the firs t la p . Ma rk Bu rns and Bryan Crampton headed th e Beg in n ers followed by G eo rge Ferne and Rob R eidman . By la p three, Bra nd o n Schneider had wo r ked hi s wa y up fro m wa y back in th e pack to third . O n lap four , h e sli p ped past Maxwell to run in second a nd Barrick dropped to fourth . Schneider took the lead from Ell iott o n lap five, but Elliott didn 't ba ck off a nd th e tw o began a n elbow banging co ntes t. Maxwell was hanging onto third a nd it looked lik e Reid rnan 's superhi gh jumps had ca rried him to th e lead of th e Beg in ners. Schneider and Elliott co ntin ued th eir privat e race and had put about 30 seconds between th emselv es and Maxwell. Maxwell had hi s o wn worri es. Out o f th e du st thundered Truhin ski !
