By Kit Palmer SUNNYMEAD, CA, AP R. 10 Yama ha pilot Jerry Anker, known as the " O ra n ge Crush" beca use of his bright-o ran ge riding gear, won a tough ba ttl e in todav's Cal ifornia Racing Club MX at DeAnza Cycle Park. Anker had to put up with some stiff competition from Richard Hoffman (Hon) and Malcolm Smith's Mike Roberts (Yam). When the ga te dropped for the start of moto on e on the redesign ed race course, Ro bert s roosted to the fro nt of the pack. Hot in pursuit o f Rober ts were An ker, Hoffman and O cea nsid e Honda's Mitch Palmer (Hon). For the next five laps, the top th ree riders never spread more than a bi kelength apart. During th e fif th lap, Ro ber ts dropped h is guard and let An ker sneak by for the lead. Hoffma n th en pu t heav y pressure on Ro berts u ntil Hoffman had control of the serond spot by lap 10. Within a lap, Hoffman reeled in the leader to duel for the lead. On the fin a l la p , the two leaders were side by side at times. Bu t Anker held on for the win. Hoffman took second followed by Roberts and Palmer. Ro berts again jammed into the lead at th e sta rt of moto two, just ahead of H offman and Anker. Ro bert s h eld on to his lead for 'th e . next eigh t laps until he went wide in a steep uphi ll tum and Hoffman slip ped by. Three laps later, Anker also passed Roberts. Anker then set after H o ffma n. The two dueled for th e next nine laps until Hoffman surrendered th e lead with on ly two laps rem aining. The moto reached its climax when H offman m ade a lastditch effort to regai n the lead on the last go-round. But it ba ckfired when H o ffm an 's th rottle hand was jarred o ff the handlebar s on a large and fas t jump. Ho ffman went down very hard. L ucki ly, he wa s up and on his feet shortly aft erward, a lthough out o f the race. Anker went on to take th e win followed by Palmer and Ro ber ts. Malcolm Smith's Eric MacCracken (Yam ), aft er a lengthy layoff, came back as fast as ever a nd proved it by capturing th e win in th e O pen Pro class. He also managed to beat all the Engineered for Performance ..
