" While those two wer e busy turning in th e finish of th e day, Cooley took Iourth ahead ' of P ietri a nd McDon· a ld. Bettencourt a nd Aldana wer e seventh and eig h th, followed by Honda privateer Bernd Koegler and Orlando . Overall positions were th e same. excep t that Orlando got th e points for ninth and Koegler was credi ted with 10th overall. "T h a t was a good last la p ," smiled Renfrow wh en it was over. "I had planned to dr aft Ernde, but he nearly slid out in th e fina l turn. I had to hit the brak es. From then on we just motored to the corner and I got there first . Coe nearly got us both." Renfrow had n 't been up fro n t in either of th e.qualifying heats, which were 'ta ken by Texan Hugh H u m ble and Coe, with Coe just a tick of a • second faster. R enfrow wasn't u p fro n t in th e .ea rly goi ng ei ther, as Dave Bu sb y pu r h is air-cooled 350cc Yamaha up front of a snapping pack that was made up or Emde, H umble and Tracy DeMuro. Wh ile most or the pack was running water-cooled Yamaha TZ250s, DeMuro wa s also mounted o n an a ircooled 350cc. The top Iour, running with their wh eels alm ost glued to eac h o ther , co nt in ued that wa y for th e fi rst rive laps a s Renfrow worked h is way into rifth . Emde took the lead on th e six th lap, a n d three laps later Busby was o u t with m echanical problems. What followed was 12 laps or pure ra cing, with th e battle Ior th e lead involving .u p to six riders at a time. Ernde, Humbleand DeMuro were th e first riders involved, but th ey were soon joined by R h ys H owa rd , Ren tro w and Coe. Emde and H u m ble seemed to do m ost or the leading through the middle o r the race, with Coe sneaking in to lead a couple. It set up for the last la p wi th Em de lead in g Renfrow, Coe and Humble. H oward and DeMuro had dropped sligh tly off th e pace. When the leaders made their run a t the checkered, they were so cl ose th a t no of ficial ann ou nceme nt on w ho had won the race was made Ior several mi nutes. The o fficia ls gave it to Ren frow by inches, wi th Coe second and Emde third. H umble Iinish ed Iourth, DeMuro fifth and Howard sixth. Don Greene took seventh and was followed by R ussell Pau lk, joseph Reynosa an d Chris Stewart. All rode Yamahas. Emde said or that last turn a ffair, " I thought I had it coming out or nine, but then the rear tire let goand I almost kissed the wall. I was lu cky I didn 't go down. California Superbike School Challenge Emde outsnaps Wolff By Dale Brown Photos by.Patrick Behar RIVE RS IDE, CA, AP R . 17 What started out as a fun race be tween the co untry's top privaleers on iden tica l Kawasaki G Pz550s, turned into a race to the finish with David Emde taking th e o ver Thad Wolf£. Frank Mazur finished a respectable third, with the rest or th e pa ck back a distance. The 1O-lap ra ce wa s sponsored by th e California Superbike School, a nd used th e in stitution or higher cornering's GPz550s. T o make th e ra ce as even as p ossible , a ll riders were weighed beforehand, and lead weights were attached to the bikes or lighter riders. Mazur's bike reportedly had more than 60 pounds or lead attached. The battle for was primarily between Emde a nd Wol£f throughout th e race . Emde took the holeshot over Oregon 's Dan Bennett and Wolff. Dav e Busby was running fourth in the early going, bu t Mazur soon made his way by both -Busby and Ben nett . As the race deve loped, Emde a nd Wol£f were well clear o r the p ack a nd having run , engaging in activi ties tha t ranged from wea vin g do wn the back straight, to reaching over and pinching the o th er rider. Mazur rode In third a nd a battle involving R ichard Cham bers, Busby a n d Hugh Humble was going o n Ior fourth. When it came down to the last lap. the two lea ders got serious. They 'd been nose to tail and side by side through most of the race, and as they came through turn nine for the last time, Ernde had the lead a nd he held off Wol£f to tak e the win by about a bikelength. "On the last lap," explained Emde, " Instead of shifting to sixth on the back straightaway, I left it in fifth and really buzzed the engine. That'gav e me th e drive I really needed orr th e co rn er. It started off as a fun thing, but Thad and I really got to rac in g towards the end." Mazur wa s a co m forta ble third, less than three seco nd s beh ind the lead ers. Despite th e eveness of the machinery, th e top three pulled well a hea d or th e ma in scrap Ior fourth . Monise the master By Lori Tyson R IVERSIDE, CA , AP R. 16-17 Howard Monise went a t it wi th Steve Re ynosa in the Lockh art Super Street Race in the amaleur ponion of the Bell/Budweiser Superb ike Weekend. O n la p eight o r the 15-lapper, Monise was able to stretch a sizeable lead to take the win. Da n Cas hen a nd Bob Rodrick dueled for third with R odrick the victor. The race ran both AFM '450 and 600cc Super Street classes. In the seventh lap Aaron Post and j eff Tuttobene went down hard in turn six and, although bo th riders were OK, only Tuuoben e's bike li ved to tell. Doug Booth and je£f Braucht fought for fifth until Booth crashed unhurt in the 12th la p . In the G P4 class, Cycle Service! Hondaline/ Golden Spectro/ Quicksilver-sponsore d Len Gambo was victorious after bauling IBCO's Rick Mitchell a nd encountering a red flag and restart on the fo urth lap d ue to a downed rider. Bo th men rode ha rd and put on a good race . An othe r good race was fo r th ird ' _ between Tulsa , Olka., rid er Tryg Westby an d Tem ple City Kawasaki 's Dave Langford. Westb y wo n th is round, but la ter in th e Production 5 class Langford held Westb y behin d to take seco nd behind Mark Shel ton by a couple or inches. Hi Deser t! R iversid e Kawasaki rid er Shelto n came back Irom a Sa tu rda y crash to win th e Production 5 class by a lengthy margin. In the GP2 and GP3 ra ce, Mark T ho mas took an ea rly lead b u t was h eaded by Ken n y Stack by the halfway point, with Da n Cashen also getting by to push Thomas back to th ird. The top three rema ined unchanged the remainder or the race. bu t Christine Baur (G P2 ) and Do ug Toland (G P3) diced it up hard the entire race for third in their respective classes.
