Yamaha Support rider Jim Holley was nex t ahead of Hardick. . Hardick and Liles displaced Holley on the first lap, and Bell did a lap later. Bell worked on catching Liles for the remainder of the mota for fifth. He caught him napping on the fin al lap and nipped him at the line by a hair. Canadian Champ Ros s Pederson moved hi s Suzuki up behind Hardick and ahead of Yamaha rider John Whelchel and Honda Support rider Jeff H icks. Burnworth added spice to the second moto by matching Hannah's Honda pony for pony up the start hill and grabbing th e holeshot. He held up Hannah for part of a lap, but th e score sheets had Hannah leading every la p . Johnson, m uc h to his chao . grin, provided en tertainment a lso . Bailey was p rotecting h is lines, but J ohnson came o u t of th e ba ck sec tio n in th e lead a n d Bailey followed a short ti me later, reo arranging levers an d such. Bailey was not pl eased with th e in cid ent. " I don't feel like I did an ythi ng wrong to th e guy," said Bailey after th e ra ce. " H annah disappeared to a 46·second lead at th e fini sh and Bailey passed Burnworth about two laps from th e end . After that th e order read as before. Whelchel took ei ghth for eighth overall. Jim T arantin o 's Honda Support bik e wa s next. Pederson rounded the top 10. Overall Pederson wa s ninth and Tarantino 10th . Despite the lack of long, close battles , the spectacular track, which deteriorated to a curious mixture of sand and rock-hard sections alternating with good traction sections, kept the estimated crowd of 12,000 happy. Many of the riders were not so pleased. Johnson and Bailey both called positions that others would have been happy for, bad and Irustrating days. O'Mara had spent 14 days . every day trying to get more p ower o u t of his Honda a nd was pl ea sed with h is ride and th e develop me nt wo rk.
