WA, APR, 2 Eric Hall (WP Racing/Newberg Honda/Honda Support) returned to the northwest after an outstanding weekend at Hangtown ... an d p ro ceeded to dom in at e today's 250cc Pro class at the Woodl and Motocross tr a ck. R owdy Blasd ell (Gresh am Suzu ki), back again on a 125, won both mot os of the small bor es, but n ot wi thout pressure from Kawasaki-mounted Derrick Personeue, wh o tra veled all th e way from Id aho, and Yam aha rider J on Bu yas. Buyas was seco nd in th e fir st moto wh ile Personett e gu ide d hi s green mach in e to th e second position durin g mota number two . Highland Honda-m ounted Rob Burkhart gra bbed both holesh ot s o f today 's 250cc races, but, it was H all who ran a way wit h both wins. Ca ldwell H onda's J oe Wri ght, wh o mad e th e trip with Personett e from Sp ud La nd , had a fir st moto secon d a fter a grea t duel with Burkhart, wh o took third . J on Buyas and David Froembl in g rounded o u t th e to p five. Burkhart was abl e to h old o ff Wri ght during a wet seco nd mot o an d th at also gave him seco nd o vera ll. Dav id Roger s (Hu s]. - Whiting, Miller, Winningham wallop Corvallis ST By Clay Light CORVALLIS , OR, APR. 2 The next to last indoor short track race of the 1982-83 Ben ton County Fairgrounds Series in Corvallis was topped by AMA Jun ior Dave Whiting, who won a th rilling 250cc A main event on h is D&V Electri c/Harrv Lillie/ Ya maha Sports Center/ Bu ffa'lo Number Pl ates Yam aha. AMA Expert Scott Miller took doubl e main win s, blitzing the Open A main a n d th e 250cc Pro main events. Fell ow Expert Richard Win ningham did th e deed s in th e Open Pro main to ca p off a su per eveni n g of racing, the last race for points this seaso n . Whitin g put h is Harry Lillieprepped, YZ-based machine on th e pole p osition as th e 250cc ma ch in es go t read y for 15 laps of A main ac tio n. Whiting took advantage of the 10-rider, two-row start and nabbed th e ea rly lead. H e pulled away on lap two to ou tcla ss th e co m petitio n , leavin g th e battle for second to Frank Cr an e and Bultaco riders Ri ck Hill an d Dann y Bell, Cr ane fin all y took the seco nd place portion while ano the r exci ting di ce was oc cu rrin g in mid-pack as so u the rn Oregon riders Bob Klum a n d Novice Bob Ingel fou ght it out for fifth. Whiting h it lappers by the three-quarter mark an d went on to secure the win over Cran e, Hill, Bell , Cain and Inge!. Bruce Turnbull led off the line a t th e sta rt of th e Open A main with Miller putting his 500 Honda into second and Marty Zirbel third. Miller quickly overtook Turnbull as did Zirbel and Jim Torpey. Zirbel and Torpey got too close during their ,strugg le and both went sprawling .t~ greet Mother Earth an d lose valuabl e tim e. Californ ian. Dennis Pinheiro mov ed into the th ird p osition, th en to seco n d until he st alle d with a lap to go , giv in g Turnbull seco n d in th e chaotic race. Miller took the win and had a half lap lead wh en th e flag fell. Winningham an d Turnbull were 1-2 when therubberband snapped for th e Open Pros to thunder off th e line, but it was Winningham and Novices Mik e Huffman and Chuck Glender in th at order at th e co m p letio n of lap one. Winningham seem ed to be in full contro l wh il e Zirbel, Huffman , Gl ender and Turnbull swap ped places aga in a nd aga in until Zirbel fin ally got the handle an d took second w ith Turnbull third a nd Huffman holding off Glender for fourth . Novice Mike Lawrence h ad his Honda on the pole position in th e 250cc Pro main even t, whi ch was 10 rider s stro n g, after th e field was trimmed down from the original 27 riders sign ed up. Miller launch ed hi s Can-Am into th e lead when racing got underway, followed by Junior Ellis Cookman, Crane, Klum and Junior Harry Th omas . Lawrence settled into second and was determined to set out after Miller, who was once again fleeing the field. Miller aga in m anaged to blow the competition into the weed s, putting a quarter lap on Lawrence and Thomas, who were a close 2-3. Cr ane took fourth , Whiting fifth and Cookman sixth. Turnidge charges to Baker 100 win By Kathi Da vis BAKER, OR, MAR. 27 Brad Turnidge (A-l Cycle/495 KTM ) came from behind on the last lap to win the Team Slugs desert race. The race was short ened from three laps on th e 33mile co u rse, to tw o laps, because of th e a mo u n t of rain an d snow during , th e week. Some of th e riders did not like the idea of th e race being sh orten ed when it was announced during th e riders' meeting, however , a t the end of the ch allenging race none of th e riders were complaining. T urn idge grabbed th e lead at th e sm okebo m b with Reed Brigh t, Bill Dow ers and Randy Wing hot on his tail. Turnidge started to bu ild a lead o n th e first lap, th en the sn ow started to fall. H e was n ot wearing goggles a nd the snowfla kes hitting him in the eyes hurt so much he had to slow down. Meanwhile, Wing was on th e move to pass Dow ers and Bright. When Turnidge start ed slowing down, Wing found a n easy opportunity to gr ab the overall lead. He still held the lead a t the halfway point, bu t shortly. thereafter, hit a hole th at slammed hi s chest on the handlebars, cracking one of his ribs and so mehow a lso injuring his an kle. Wing was struggl ing to finish the ra ce when Bright passed him for the overall lead, followed by Dowers, Ken Maahs, and Turnidge. . As Turnidge pitted, he was more interested in ·goggles than gas .
