Stephens/Owens out-endure SNRR lour-hour By Don Akers LAS VEGAS , NV, MAR . 27 Slim Stephens and Lance Owens, riding the Kawasaki West/Wildlife Performance GPz 750, persevered for four Mark Maxwell (4011 leada Lance Rieman in CRC 126cc Beginner action. 52 Novices there were three riders who hit the first corner before Musson. But before the first lap was over, Musson made a few passes and took over the leader's position from Bryan Paquette on a Honda. Jeff Wright and Mark Romero placed third and fourth. In the first rnoto Rick Pickering placed sixth but improved greatly in the £inal event. Pickering took the holeshot and led Romero and Musson.. It wasn 't long before Romero disposed of Pickering and took the lead for a good portion of the race. Musson came from third place and made the winning move while £lying over the double jumps and demoted Romero back to second. Musson had to work hard for the lead in both mo tos, but in each case he took the first wave of the checkered flag. Two wins earned Musson more first place brass over Paquette and Romero. Adding to the challenge for the 250cc Novices was the fact tha t the 125cc Novices were on the track at the same time. While Musson swept his contest, Jon Barrick had one bad rnoto, but won the l25cc Novices nonetheless. Chris Pillow took the honors in the first moto o£ the 125cc Novice class with Kenneth Maciver in second and Chuck Whitmore taking third. Jon Barrick was in the top three when he dropped his Honda while charging downhill. Barrick was knocked back to firth place. Follow the leader was the name o£ the game in the final moto as there were six riders contending for the lead within 50 feet of each other. Maciver was up front and being pursued by Mark Cramm, Jon Barrick, Chris Pillow, Jeff Matiasevich and John Gersjes. Breaking up the order was Barrick, who zapped Cramm on a small uphill turn. Barrick was on the move and after Maciver. He finally took the lead when heading down a hill and hauled past Maciver. Cramm was back in third, but not for long as he out-powered Maciver on a small stretch to take over second. _ Matiasevich had been racing minis, but proved today that he can really ride a 125. He was the next in the pack to overcome Maciver and take third behind leaders Barrick 'a nd Cramm. On the trophy list it was Barrick, Maciver, Matiasevich and Pillow. Results 60 NOV: 1. When the starting flag dropped, Stephens squirted out to an early lead. A half hour into the race Stephens was still in the lead, but the . Yamaha Seca ridden' by the team of Jody Morgan and Armando Melgosa had dropped out with the first of many ailments that was to relegate them to the status of also ran . Arter a half an hour of fran tic wrenching they were able to re-enter the race, but at a decided disadvantage. At the one hour mark the team of Mark and Steve Shelton, riding for High Desert Kawasaki, had usurped the number one position. This left the Stephens/Owens team in second with the hard charging duo o£ Jim Cox and Mike Williams on their Honda-Kawasaki o£ Las Vegas/ABC Copy Service GPz 550 in third. By the time the race was at the halfway point, the lead had changed again. The Owens/Stephens team was back in first with Cox and Williams in second and the Shelton brothers running third. In fourth p lace, by virtue o£ steady, consistent riding, was the Bruce Haupt and Jon Parisen a team riding a brand new GS750ESD Suzuki backed by Wildlire Performance/Freelance Court Reporters. At the three hour mark the first three positions remained unchanged, but an alert pit crew member flagged the Parisena/Haupt bike in for a front tire change when he spotted cords showing through the rubber. About 15 minutes after that, local favorites Jack Baker and Henry "Mr. Clean" Tecza retired their 550 Vision when a broken exhaust pipe fried an exhaust valve and turned their twin into a thumper! At the finish line it was Stephens/ Owens first, Cox /Williams second and Haupt/Parisena third. The first two positions were never in question towards the end ofthe race , but third place .was a real squeaker! Jon Parisen a was at the helm o£ the big look and turning some pretty decent lap times when he came around motioning for a fuel stop. His pit crew checked with the official timer and round that there was only rive minutes left in the race. Because Jon was running only 13 seconds behind the then third place bike, ridden by the team of David Jenesko and Chris Coswell o£ Westlake Suzuki, the pit crew flashed him a "Go for it!" sign on the chalk board. Shortly thereafter J on passed the J enesko/Coswell bike 10 take over third place, but as he went by the pi ts on the last lap his crew could hear his bike start 10 lean out. We talked to Jon at the finish and he said that he backed out of it a little on that last lap, but he still coasted into the pits with only a memory of £uel left in the tankl We'd also like to make special mention o£ the firth place team o£ David Old/Christine Bauer. This team had the only £emale team mern- ber in the race . and she more than held her own. My curiosity was naturally picqued when I saw a woman 's name on the sign up list, so I wandered through the pits before the race asking questions. When I hit one o£ the Wildli£e Performance pit crew members, a roadracer himself, he told me "I hate 10 admit it, but she's turning raster lap times tha n I do!" The team ran a good, steady race on their 750 Honda Interceptor until about 20 minutes before the finish, when Old lost it in fast turn one. He was able 10 right the bike and limp on into the pits where Christine took over and finished the race , but the down time was just too much o£ a handicap. Berdyck & Olson's stanza at DeAnza OTMX By Bob A lloy SUNNYMEAD, CA, MAR . 20 There was mud aplenty at DeAnza today, but thanks to Doug Hall, owner and operator, the track was rerouted so that there was just enough mud for good traction. There were 38 Old Timers riproaring around out there and having a great time. "Movin' Marv " Olson did it once . again with two very fast wins in the Masters class . Marshall Jennings and his Honda grabbed a second both times around. George Spearing, o£ the Junior Masters, displayed some real winning techniques and some fast moving to put himself in first place. Bob Berdyck £011 owed Spearing in for second place. The second moto's win went to Berdyck, who started things with a holeshot and stayed out there in front for all 10 laps. Spearing got a bad start, but did some quick catching up to come in second. Expert Richard Lyons found the righ t lines to take him in 10 first in his class . Asker Larnkjaer managed 10 maneuver himself past all ' ob sta cles for a great second place win. The second moto began with Bob Crandall in the lead for two laps. Then Lyons took over the lead for three laps. At that po int , Larnkjear got his Suzuki out front and just kept it there until he had won. Kurt Sofka £o.llowedAsker in with a second place WIn. Gorden Mathieu looked like a winner in the Amateur class, and for six laps he led the action. However, he developed some problem and Bob Klatt, riding his new Honda 480, passed him by. Bob then took his lead onward to the finish. Bill Qualls also rode a Honda into a good spot, second place. Bob Alloy made it in with third. Mathieu's luck was with him in the second rnoto. He got everything ' together and running smoothly and took a winning first place. Jones was in with second and Klatt took third place honors. Dale Brockett was the Novice who led nine other Novices and took that class win. Larry Escamilla did all right for himself with his second place finish. Dick Fettel got his Yamaha into third place. The second rnoto began with Oren Spahn leading the Novices, and for six laps he continued to do so. Ray Montoya, riding a Kawasaki, gassed on past and zoomed on for a moto win. Spahn held in there for second and DaleBrockett ended up withthird.
